Jonah Hex Creator Tony DeZuniga Passed Away Today.

05.11.2012 – News and current status on Filipino Comic Book Legend Tony DeZuniga has been confirmed that he passed away early this morning at 1:30AM.

The famed Filipino artist is the co-creator of DC Comics’ Jonah Hex the disfigured anti-hero and Black Orchid which made him well known in the late 1960s and early 1970’s.

He has inspired a lot of Filipino artists who pursued their dreams to be like Tony DeZuniga and he will surely be missed for being such a nice guy.


He will always be remembered for bringing Filipino talent in the North American Comic Book industry. Mr. DeZuniga came back to the Philippines and in January 2007 which held a one-man exhibit at the Crucible in SM Megamall. It was widely received by the local komiks community and welcoming him back to the country. He followed with a second exhibit also at the Crucible in 2009. He did a lot of talks and his most recent which is his last was back in November 2011 at the Secret Fresh Gallery.



His last international convention appearance was back in July 2011 when he was named of the recipients for the Inkpot Awards during the San Diego Comic Convention and prior to that his last public appearance in Komikon also November 2011.

Tony DeZuniga is known for co-creating western anti-hero Jonah Hex with John Albano back in December 1971 and the character first appeared in All-Star Western #10. He also co-created Black Orchid with Sheldon Mayer in 1973.

He was present with his family during the red carpet screening of the film version of Jonah Hex in 2010.

Tony DeZuniga was "the first Filipino artist whose work was accepted by an American Publisher," paving the way for many other Filipino artists to do break into the international comic book industry.
