Non-Spoiler Alert! Star Trek Into Darkness!
Previously the 2009 film was shown in the IMAX Theater in SM Mall of Asia and it was a bigger crowd compared to this one. Now don’t expect any spoilers or plot points as you all know the actual showing the film will be on May 15, 2913 and this is definitely going to be more about the characters and how things got better from the original film.
Based on the trailers that has been revealed we got John Harrison what Starfleet described as “one of their own” as the premise of the trailers shown the crew was in a pre-warp civilization.
You’ve seen Spock being lowered down inside the volcano from the shuttle pod piloted by Uhura and Sulu. As you see that Spock wears a new EVA suit that can take strong heat resistance a new technology that takes back to the Enterprise TV show where Capt. Archer and his crew used a very primitive version of the suit. Spock in the current film has grown to accustomed to the crew and Zachary Quinto given that he has taken over Leonard Nimoy’s character as got hand-on in the character.
Chris Pine certainly has his own Kirk moments in this film that definitely elevates the character that William Shatner would possibly be proud of. Kirk in his youth now as one of the youngest Starfleet Captain still has that cockiness attitude.
Then we have the lovely Zoe Zaldana as Nyota Uhura which is the heart of the crew and described by John Harrison in the TV spots. The relationship with Spock in the previous film continues to unravel Into Darkness. While other characters like John Cho as Sulu, Anton Yelchin as Chekov, and Simon Pegg as Scottie had their individual moments. But one man definitely brings out the goods since he has taken the roll of the DeForrest Kelly’s Dr. Leonard McCoy, that man is Karl Urban.
As memorable as Kelly’s interpretation of the character Urban makes Bones even more memorable than ever. Kelly created McCoy but after Urban has assumed the role the character became more popular delivering some of the famous lines in his on reinterpretation.
It must be fun having Dr. McCoy on your ship than some guy who doesn’t show his face from Mega City One. Karl Urban’s character has won new fans with his wit and you cannot ask for more to see him back hopefully for a third one.
There are certainly Easter eggs and nods to the series but comparing this to the 2009 film this goes deeper as JJ Abrams once said.
If some traditional fans were unhappy that their Star Trek was “Star Warsified” this one is definitely a hallmark to long time Trekkies. The film is not into action this time around but it delves further to the mythos of the ever growing franchise.
JJ Abrams has definitely hit the mark on this and definitely the writers in Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman, and Roberto Orci have put their heart telling us a great story that will be remembered.
To those who have seen Peter Weller in Star Trek Enterprise TV episodes “Demons” and “Terra Prime” from season 4 expect his role as Admiral Marcus to be as memorable as John Frederick Paxton. You got Robocop as the head of Starfleet Command minus the robotic attitude.
Alice Eve as Dr. Carol Marcus adds a new face to the crew that you’ll find her interesting besides getting naked in one scene of the trailer.
Benedict Cumberbatch’s mysterious character in John Harrison is going to give you a lot of unanswered questions. But we leave that for you to find out once the film opens nationwide next week.
' Overall the pace, the scenes and all that gravitas continued from the first was definitely consistent in bringing Star Trek Into Darkness another big film for you to see when it opens in Philippine cinemas on May 15, 2013 from Solar Entertainment.
This one gets a 9 out of 10 latinum strips for one of the best films to see in 2013 and old Trekkies should enjoy this just like the first one definitely.
