Agents of SHIELD Review: Season 1 EP 2!

10.03.2013 – Agents of SHIELD has given the fans something to catch up Tuesday nights on ABC in the US. It’s great that Marvel Entertainment is expanding their show putting up a television series that would have connections to the cinematic universe.

The “Pilot” episode have a lot teasing in the show itself with the cameo appearance of Cobie Smulders reprising her role as Maria Hill. But no mistake the obvious announcement in “0-8-4” when they started marketing it.

Though it would be a surprise but for those who aren’t ready for potential SPOILERS might suggest to not reading this. Upcoming second reveals a premise that Coulson and his S.H.I.E.L.D. agents travel to Peru to investigate an object of unknown origin, codenamed “0-8-4.” But when he runs into Commander Camilla Reyes, more than just sparks fly at 30,000 feet.

Entirely the whole scene plays out inside “The Bus” their newly refurbished SHIELD flying HQ with a little bit of field action through the chase scenes in the second act. Melinda May (Ming Na Wen) certainly the least talkative and mysterious member of the group just shows as “The Cavalry” and adds some good dialogue with Grant Ward. There’s little backstory from the other characters like Fitz and Simmons or the additional member joining the team with Skye who plays out as the odd character still connected to the mysterious “Rising Tide” organization with exception of the calm leadership that Agent Coulson brings in the series needs to give each character a spotlight that viewers would like to get connected.

There were a lot of terminologies and connection to the Marvel Universe and you’ll feel that this show is part of that place everyone have seen several times but in a small screen. Though the characters needs to be given its own voice as not just part of a team Coulson has put up together.

It’s rather odd that they are marketing a “special guest cameo” prior to the airing of the show. It would have been cool to have it un-announced as this early stage since they are only running a second episode.

Samuel L. Jackson’s commitment to the character clearly shows something for the fans to look further beyond just another television series related to the movies that Marvel Entertainment had built. They have their closes competitor in DC and WB in the ropes having a good streak of films under its belt where they are slowly building theirs. Now that talk about televisions shows starting to mine a huge well of stories from a superhero theme like this should not be difficult to do compared it 10 to 15 years ago.

Overall “0-8-4” is great romp but not as strong as the “Pilot” episode but definitely gives everyone to cheer about hearing Nick Fury and put some sense in Agent Coulson’s noggin regarding not putting that fish tank.

The “Rising Tide” builds up the way Star Trek Enterprise had the “Temporal Cold War” as its growing dilemma of a potential story arc behind the scenes. Adding fuel to the questions what really happened to Agent Coulson after his apparent death in Avengers we’re everyone hopes to find out in this season.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D stars Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, Brett Dalton, Chloe Bennet, Iain De Caestecker, and Elizabeth Henstridge which airs Tuesday nights in the US check your TV Guide for show times.
