Movie Review: The Desolation of Smaug!

12.11.2013 – The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug takes up the adventure after Unexpected Journey, and Peter Jackson stays consistent with the narrative heading to the next big chapter.

In this second chapter Bilbo’s quest continues, and the epic visuals are not but another part of why these films become so popular. The Philippine premiere was welcomed with pageantry similar to last year, but the star will always belong to the film itself...

This expands to the bigger adventure and has always been Bilbo Baggin’s finest moment. There are several key scenes that would find this film very different from the original material and it was explained previously. But there won’t be spoilers here to reveal as the film is the most anticipated sequel before the end of the year.

The special screening in IMAX shown was 48FPS (Frames per Second) in 3D. Imagine watching a Blu-ray home edition in a four story high screen that has the best sound system ever used which definitely worth the money to get the full experience watching this film for the Holiday season.

BILBO’S EVOLUTION

Everyone knows Bilbo won’t be the same even after he returns in the Shire and it was already stated in Unexpected Journey. Even before that in “The Fellowship of the Ring” the changes what made him go through will be revealed further visually in “Desolation of Smaug” but there are also some things reveal why this Hobbit is so popular.

Comparing Bilbo to Frodo is no brainer, which makes Martin Freeman “most fun” to watch taking this character role in a whole new level. Bilbo is on his own and that makes him stand out among the 13 Dwarves he is accompanying to reclaim their land.

NEW ZELAND IN MIDDLE-EARTH

No matter how you look at it you won’t see New Zealand as the setting for the film. The backdrop with so much detail from Tolkien’s The Hobbit never ceases to amaze those who will see this film.

Even prior to the screening press releases already describe the scenes and the places of the film that would add some incentive just to watch this film. There’s too many details to get your eyes mesmerized, and it was one of the great attractions for “Desolation of Smaug.” Lake Town makes its screen appearance for the first time and it’s quite the busy place to have fishing as one of its livelihood.

SMAUG THE DRAGON

Benedict Cumberbatch has shown once again that he can be a force to be reckoned with. He did it earlier this year as a genetically enhanced human from the 22nd century and now as a scaly large scary dragon. You can never discount such great performance where the actor is just a voice and motion capture f the dragon. A week before the film’s showing Cumberbatch had a Twitter chat using @TheHobbitMovie account to talk to fans as well as answer some questions.

He definitely was an impressive actor and a gentleman just read about those 19 things you find out more about him (courtesy of Buzzfeed.com). Surely you get to know the man as Smaug and the Necromancer all in one.

KEEP AN EYE FOR PETER JACKSON

If you’ve seen the extended editions of Lord of the Rings Trilogy on home edition this one is no spoiler but a helpful tip. The director himself has less than a handful appearance that some did not make it in the actual release. But here on “Desolation of Smaug” the esteemed director makes his immediate appearance.

Not only does he make the appearance but also make you want to watch how he directs you to Bilbo’s journey, There’s something that makes this film stand on its own and Peter Jackson certainly delivers the goods. It’s where he became successful which made him known and changes the way films are made.

THE RIDE UNEXPECTED JOURNEY IN 3D

To sum up “Desolation of Smaug” it’s a ride to itself, which can become a theme part with its great action scenes. It may disappoint the purist who read the book, but in the changing times it was adapted to appeal to a wider audience.

Overall the film is a ride of “fun” experiences that would challenge some who have read The Hobbit. The story, visuals, and characters defined the film itself which put itself with a standard on its own. It was a fun ride through the end, but that part won’t be full experienced until “Then and Back Again” in December 2014.

The film gets the highest grade of A+ and definitely worth seeing it 48FPS in 3D which makes the experience more exciting. Smaug stomps and flies like a dragon coming from hell is shown way better than those who first saw the old cartoon.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is now showing in cinemas and IMAX Theaters in the Philippines from MGM Studios and Newline Cinema. This is locally distributed by Warner Bros. Picture Studios.
