| 01.06.2015 – Last year during the trip to South Australia there was a chance to explore the city of Adelaide for comic shops in the area. So far there are two that were spotted within the vicinity of Rundle Mall that can tell its popular culture scene.
Comparing it to the Philippine comic book scene the shops are like any other ordinary store in South Australia fairly conservative much like the American counterparts. But further look into the shops as explored during the last week of December 2014. |
Due to time constraints there were only two comic shops found in Adelaide, but like any store that sells comics, toy, and other merchandise related they’re not the same as the other. But you can clearly see what’s different between these two as exploring them and checking out what they can offer that shops in the Philippines don’t have.
Early this morning before heading to TRU, the Apple store in Rundle Mall had their own Force Friday launch with the new Sphero R2-D2 and BB9-PE droids with one corner of this big shop. It was also Father’s Day for the Dads who were into Star Wars growing up and there are plenty of activities happening during this ‘Star Wars Weekend” that culminated with “Force Friday II” and here some of those images:

Pulp Fiction Comics
If you’re new to South Australia chances are you’ll be checking the commercial centres in Adelaide particularly the stores. Any comic book fan would scoot down to the nearest and easiest comic shop that you can find. Rundle Mall is the popular outdoor mall in this state of South Australia and the busiest with trams and buses running along King William Street.
You won’t miss Pulp Fiction Comics as the store can be found just along this street. With the neon lights and ‘hole in the wall’ kind of feels this shop is like a hidden treasure waiting to unravel itself that has enough comic books and merchandise to feed the hungry fans needs. You enter to the main door and find heaps of good stuff and its less crowded has a fee helpful staff to welcome you.

Adelaide Comics Centre
Perhaps the bigger of the two shops that carry not only the current comic books, but also veritable merchandise that you can see displayed from all over its place. It’s located farther in Rundle Mall past the Adelaide Arcade just where the small McDonald’s store is located. What’s different about this shop is it carries back issues from the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s. You can immediately see why it’s a ‘Comics Centre’ with shirts and toys adoring this haven for comic book readers.
This is where you’ll find out that The Phantom is a popular character in Australia as this shop has the old comic books as well as the ones currently published by Frew. Not only do they have the back issues even Phantom merchandise can be found here from mugs, trinkets and shirts they got it and they have they’re own pinball machine.

The trip around Rundle Mall was a short one looking at these two comic shops that’s far from the usual stores back in the Philippines. It also differs how their culture has been quite interesting. Phantom is certainly an American character now as popular as DC Comics’ Superman back from where it came from, but in Australia this purple clad protector of an Amazon jungle certainly ruled.
So far no local comic books were found at both of these stores. Due to short amount of time to find these independent published works probably they may be available somewhere else for now you get to view the comic shops around South Australia, and if any chance you made it there drop by and make the visit.
