| 01.13.2016 – How many times does Uncanny X-Men would start at issue number one? It’s been a while since they lasted below six hundred issues and the comic book industry has changed the one things started at number one all over again.
There’s been a little bit of discussion about the future of mutants and what their role in the new Marvel universe post-Secret Wars. It’s quite surprising that they still kept this franchise or what’s left of the list of characters alive in moving. But this time they gave them a new threat to their extinction. This is not the first time they have encountered their numbers dwindled by some legacy virus. Marvel could have ‘retired’ them the way they handled the disbanding of the Fantastic Four since they can’t get their movie rights back from the current studio that made the mockery of the recent film. But there are some good points to tell a story about the X-Men in their state of being endangered species that produced a little bit conflict with the Inhumans that had a similar concept to their genome. |
The House of Ideas has gone full blown development with Inhumans introducing them to the big screen chartering their origins through the Agents of SHIELD television series towards their film in July 2019.
But enough with the X-Men’s counterpart surely there’s still enough great stories to tell about the merry mutants and it’s all a matter of optimistic perspective right now.
In the fourth volume of Uncanny X-Men a new team is led by Magneto featuring Sabretooth, M, Psycloke, and Archangel in the first issue. The press release also mentioned that Fantomex and Mystic are part of this team, but both have not appeared in this issue. Its interesting enough how Cullen Bunn with art by Greg Land would bring some interest with this new series going through with the changes to the roster.
If you have been a long time reader of the X-Men titles don’t expect it to be the same as for those who have found renewed interest for returning fans won’t find this a ‘reconnection’ with the once proud book franchise from Marvel.
The character roster has changed but the same “protecting the world that hates and fears them…” will always be something that makes the X-Men an interesting read. But as times have changed they’ve become second tier books due to the popularity of non-mutant titles that gave Marvel the face in other media through the movies and television series.
Its still getting used to having Magneto being the leader of the team who used to be their major archenemy when the original series first premiered in 1963 or seeing Sabretooth acting in his own being a ‘kinder version” of being a psychotic killing machine that he used to be when Logan was THE face of the X-titles.
The first issue is a refresher look on how a former villain takes this team in being the ‘saviors’ of mutant kind like no other. For now if you’re curious enough pick a copy, and let us know what you think for now more mutant killings next issue.
