Mold Break | Designer Art Toy Resurgence

01.27.2020 – The emergence of the Designer Art Toy scene in the Philippines shows this country is ready to appreciate art sculpture in the form of art toys either made of resin or vinyl and this in part to so many factors why the collecting community has finally found its niche market with the recently successfully Mold Break.

Mold Break starts the new year with its event dedicated to the local designer art toy scene in the country that is ripe to empower the artists making an impact with their creations and truly embracing the interest in what is an “Art Toy” that has been popular in Singapore and the US that has finally arrived in the Manila.

Saturday’s successful inaugural event for Mold Break shows that the local toy collecting scene is ready to explore new talents making original creations from concepts inspired from popular culture.

Matter of fact, the art toy scene has been around in the country for more than a decade that slowly took centerstage as Quiccs gradually cultivated a following in the local scene and also at the same time the Funko Pop vinyl figurines introduced the concept of an ‘art toy’ and led collectors explored other genres related to this, which gave way to events focusing in this hobby.

Breaking the Mold

Long-time toy sculptor and customizers that had little success in the past found themselves having a revival interest to their creations as well as introducing new faces to the art toy scene with their original concepts that were presented to the recent event. Beside that success of Mold Break it also gave new perspective in defining the difference from what is an ‘art toy’ to mainstream toy collecting.

The event held activities like the auctions for the exclusive Boy Pusit custom art toy featuring contemporary and street art artists remaking the figurine into their style. Featured tables introduced a plethora of talented sculptors an customizers showing their wares and giving you a fresh look in appreciating art.
