| 02.21.2020 – Gerry Alanguilan is a prolific writer and illustrator that produced his self-published graphic novels in the Philippines. “Wasted” was his most popular work that introduced him in the industry followed by Timawa, Where Boldstars Go to Die, and Bakokak to name a few.
But what put him in the map in the international scene was “Elmer” that was originally published in four separate issues that was compiled into a trade paperback edition. |
Recently, Alanguilan announced the international release prior to his untimely passing in December 2019 and he discuss about it with Epigram in this video. Epigram is a Singapore–based publishing house that is now has the international licencing rights to publish “Elmer” that revealed a brand new cover. In this video that was sent by Gerry’s wife, Ilyn where he discuss his beginnings putting together his early creations like Wasted and how he became popular with the “Hey Baby” meme.
This also pays tribute to the author and illustrator, who was the ‘keeper of the flame’ that kept the lost herniate of Philippine komiks that he also opened up his own museum aka the Komikero Komiks Museum in his hometown of San Pablo in Laguna. Besides publishing his own books he also worked for DC and Marvel alongside Leinil Yu as his stalwart inker.
Some of his friends and followers considered Gerry as the old sage bridging the gap between the past and the future of Filipino Komiks. Some considered him the Filipino counterpart of the late great Stan Lee. But most of those who have known him the down to earth and humorous Gerry were he simply known as “Komikero.”
