Movie Review: Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs 2!

10.09.2013 – If you have not seen the original Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs there won’t be a problem if you are geared to see part 2. There might be surprising spoilers ahead but surely it’s up to you to decide to read or leave it.

The actors reprise their roles with the exception of Officer Earl Devereaux which was originally voiced by Mr. T in the first animated film. But the character was being taken care of now by Terry Crews. The screening was done at SM Megamall courtesy of HERO a local cable channel in the Philippines.

The animation is great and the dialogues still carry the way it was done in the original film. You can still have the same “feel” of the first film but the appearance can be deceiving. It has been three years since the original film wowed new fans but it had lost something that made this cool.

Right now it’s just there with the entertainment value but with the story and its characters need to get back to how Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs 2 should be a fun animated film when there’s something missing in there that could seal the deal.

Visually it’s still great carrying over the aftermath on what happened in the first film directly connecting with the sequel is like you have not missed anything if you’re a first time viewer. It’s rare you’ll skip a beat not knowing what really went down in the original but good enough to immediately throw in the story for the sequel.

There was no dull moment as everyone was on their toes trying to keep up what happens next like turning a page of the original children’s book that was loosely based inspired to making it to an animated feature. The voice actors still have it there to have this movie continue to possibly have another sequel.

You’ll get hungry watching this as you see creatures known as the Foodimals walk around like the “Shrimpanzee” or the “Tacogator” torment the heroes while conquering adversary and trying to save their beloved home. The conventional 2D screening was great but if it’s in 3D appearance could be better.

The flow of the story was great heavily focused on the values of friendship and family which drives this animated film. It’s quite a joy ride seeing these characters again if you have seen the original. It outgrows the original film that was loosely based on the children’s book with the same name. It was quite entertaining which deserves Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs a fun animated feature to see.

Overall it earns a B+ not as perfect as any other animated film but it sure have grown up from the first one. It expands the world where Flint Lockwood and his friends struggle to find a way to save their home.

Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs 2 opens in Philippine cinema on October 9, 2013 in 2D and selected 3D theaters from Sony Picture Animation locally distributed by Columbia Picture Studios.
