| 08.11.2020 - The Batmobile is the single most important part of the Batman mythology that’s important to the character that appeared in the same time introducing the Caped Crusader in Detective Comics #27.
It has evolved through the car’s technology and has been adapted in other media that also includes the videogames, film, and animation adapting through the times the same way Batman’s character development. The Batmobile from the 1989 film was introduced is something else that became an icon on its own. |
In 1989, this Batmobile became more popular when director Tim Burton helmed the very first modern Batman film casting Michael Keaton in the lead as Batman/Bruce Wayne and of course, introducing what would be the Batmobile for this film and its sequel that produced varying merchandise throughout the years and it was iconic.
There have been also documentaries featuring the Batmobiles of the past and its most recent iteration up to The Dark Knight Trilogy with the Tumbler. But the “Keaton Mobile” was one car that defined the late 1980s, which also influenced the early 1990s and beyond namely the Batman Animated Series and the comicbook’s overall design and sleek aesthetics in that particular era.
The Batmobile from the 1989 film has received various iterations of merchandise in the past that you might lose count who manufactured it. But in 2012 Japanese toy manufacturer Takara Tomy has produced it under its diecast brand Tomica as part of its sub-brand based on licensed vehicles from animation, film, and videogame. The “Keaton mobile” was actually part of the first wave of the Dream Tomica range that also includes the TDK Trilogy’s Tumbler.
But this version of the Batmobile in 1989 is close enough casting of the vehicle based on the said film that is less cartoonish than its previous attempt at being produced into collectible merchandise by other competing diecast brands.
Despite its accurate representation, it is produced on a smaller scale, and in comparison to the other previous variations, it doesn’t have internal detail. But the external overall appearance clearly captures the likeness of the Batmobile that Michael Keaton has driven in both Batman and Batman Returns. The small details on the side of the car are painted in silver the same as the base of the casting.
Although it lacks internal details like a driver seat or steering wheel to keep up the affordable price point Tomica made sure it doesn’t miss out on the quality of its overall external appearance. Even the rims are painted in silver and the little details like the front and tail lights are painted too.
Comparing it to another brand like the one Hot Wheels produced it is diminutive in size, but this one is more accurate to its big-screen counterpart than the larger cartoonish look produced by Mattel for their iconic brand. Even though the size and having internal details on the car it doesn’t come close to the way the “Keaton mobile” is represented in diecast form.
Overall the Batmobile from Batman 1989 is a game-changer for its time influencing other media representing what Batman and the Batmobile to the fans have read the comicbooks since his introduction. Despite not having internal details the Batmobile from Dream Tomica is a collectible to the fans that have seen the film and continues to appreciate what made Batman, the character, and his iconic car a favorite.
