The NCCA Gallery | Velasquez Komiks Eksibit

Filipino Komiks has been around that has become part of the culture, and with that the history has been a challenging narrative by itself. These days mainstream people would immediately say they no longer exist due to that local book shops have slowly stop carrying graphic novels published by local and foreign publication.

But there are still a community that keeps that culture alive, and most of them have been their relatives of these creators carrying their legacy to continue and remind people that they’re not going to be forgotten that easily. Because without this constant reminder of the past there won’t be a country that will remember that it happened.

For Ian Velasquez, the writer and modern take on his grandfather’s series in The New DI-13 is more about carrying the family’s legacy with both his grand uncle, Tony Velasquez and grandfather’s creations that featured the iconic Kenkoy and the original DI-13 that is now being on exhibit at the NCCA (National Commission for the Culture and Arts) Gallery inside the historical walled city of Intramuros in Manila, which has been teased by the author on his social media last week.

The Gallery is bringing this “eksibit" to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Ponyang Halobaybay just like Kenkoy she represented the modern, independent, and fashionable Filipina in the 1930-1950s appearing originally on Liwayway Magazine. This is also the anniversary year for the original DI-13 created by his grandfather, Damy Velsquez.

Filipinos and foreign visitors will have the chance to get up close and see some of the surviving original comic panels that were published by Liwayway Magazine, and a mini display featuring the modern publication of The New DI-13 that Ian Velasquez has started publishing in 2018 with Rico Rival.

It’s a treasure trove of original and reproduction of pages as well as memorabilia on display at the NCCA Gallery curated by Ian, Mel Casipit, and award-winning writer and artist Randy Valiente that has already been opened to look back at the past at the same time be inspired by the history and stories that you can share that no one has ever heard of about these unforgettable classics.

Velasquez Komiks Eksibit featuring Kenkoy, Ponyang Halobaybay, and characters from DI-13 is already on exhibit at the NCCA Gallery from 6-30 June 2022. For more about Kenkoy and more upcoming stories of The New DI-13 you can follow Ian Velsquez on social media via Instagram!
