| These days, you’ll never find a toy store adding a new branch to its list in the last five years. But Toys R’ Us in the Philippines just opened a new branch at the Ayala Malls Circuit just outside the CBD at a shopping centre that used to be a horse race track that opened in 2015. The only store they had before was a TRU pop-up store.
Fast forward to December 2023, and they just recently opened an actual store replacing that eight-year-old pop-up location that will cease to exist at the end of this month. For those outside the Philippines, TRU has been consistently opened along with its other Asian counterparts since it is a franchise that operates in this country. |
The new store replaces one former branch a few kilometers from this location that closed its doors at the height of the pandemic and decreased foot traffic. The Circuit Makati location makes sense to open a fully staffed branch as this shopping centre has been established and has increased foot traffic ever since it opened most of the stores five years ago.
Despite the local distributors' challenges in bringing toy brands to their shelves, this location is also a go-to place for everyone to spend time with their families and friends making this TRU location a place for their children one of the reasons to visit this particular location for a ‘kid-friendly” atmosphere.
There have been community-organized events for kids and adults into the hobby, but a permanent toy store and not just a pop-up location would give this location a boost not just for kids, but also hobbyists into toy collecting would be a fun meet-up with the community to gather up with the ever-growing social circles that are into this type of interest that helps with the location to have more foot traffic.
Since this is just newly opened, not all types of brands and products are in stock. But in the coming months, hopefully, TRU Manila HQ will consider letting the local distributors bring in some of the products that are only seen available at major TRU locations with foot traffic.
Bandai and LEGO products are so far some of the major brands you will find for construction toys and building model kits aside from diecast car collecting with brands from Hot Wheels and Matchbox produced by Mattel. This includes the Japanese diecast brand Tomica as well as action figures that you will find in one aisle.
There are also some Hasbro products, but these are the lower-end ones, and not the premium mainline that you will now find that is safely behind the glass of the flagship store. Lately, Hasbro products that produce G.I. Joe, Marvel Legends, Star Wars, and Transformers are very scarce at major retail outlets and those are available in their select branches they’ve been not seeing or sold anywhere else.
This location has a bigger floor space and this explains the size of the floor space that it occupies that can be seen even outside before you enter the shopping mall. This TRU is just on the second level and you’ll never miss it.
The New Year for this location hopefully will get its traffic for visitors nearby and those who travel just to check out what they have in stock, and it is not only for the boys' toys but also for the girls and to those adult collectors who are into collecting them. Because the toys this store has are not limited to just for kids and the moms who buy for them. It should be for everyone as the community is not just toys limited to the kids, but there are adult collectors too.
