FCBD Adelaide | Celebrated Comic Shops

05.05.2019 – Free Comic Book Day in Adelaide has become part of the locals’ annual event that it gets featured on the broadsheet The City whenever the days close in to the celebration not just about getting free comics but pop culture happening in general. If last year was any indication the huge turnout 2019 gets the best party.

One year separated from FCBD 2018 everyone was all set and ready to go as three stores within the vicinity of Adelaide was well prepared to party hard like it was Christmas in May for the passionate nerd down in South Australia.

Whenever FCBD happens all over the world there\s something special going on with each store, but not all bookstores that sell graphic novels participate in this event. Adelaide used to have four comic shops but unfortunately once closed out its door last year. But that doesn’t mean there’s not enough comic shops for Adelaide you’d be surprised how passionate fans are this side of South Australia to be in this event.

If last year’s indication that it would be the same happening don’t count out the large turn out this recent Saturdays FCBD. Each of the three stores have their way of celebrating not only promoting their brand, but also making sure everyone had a grand time enjoying the interest in reading comicbooks but also cultivating the ever growing fandom this side of Australia’s regional state.

Greenlight Comics Turns THREE

In human years this store would consider to have grown into a toddler. The store coincide its anniversary with FCBD when it opened its doors in 2016. Greenlight Comics would be sort of revolutionary in more supporting the grassroots of local self-published community organizing local gatherings for independent creative at the same time cultivating the interest in art and anything related to popular culture.

They don’t just sell comicbooks they’re actually readers themselves that suggest the very best stuff that’s out there. You speak one of the owners in the business like Ross he would suggest you some of the interesting graphic novels they carry. Each of the founding owners of the store has their geeky side of things that makes this store one of the best places to hangout during the week.

For this year’s FCBD there’s nothing more celebratory than having the best party ever for kids, adults, and everyone to walk-in the store down at 19 Stephen place just passed the end of Myer Centre on the small street just at the corner you’ll not miss it.

Adelaide Comics Centre Doing For a Cause

Considred one of the oldest comic shops founded in 1989 in South Australia, ACC has been bouncing around the city from its original location to moving to its humbling space inside Adelaide Arcade this store continues to cater to those who just want appreciate anything comicbooks has to offer to old and new readers alike.

For this year they have organize a Cosplay Parade for a Cause collaborating with Minda Inc. for a special fashion runway, where proceeds raised will go to aid Disability Support Services. Not only you can donate and support this special cause you get to hang out with local creative artists from Decay Horror Comics when you grab free comics you also get a poster from DARK OZ creators at FCBD 2019 include: writer/editor Darren Koziol, artist Michal Dutkiewicz, writer Pat McNamara and special guest artist Dave Dye (all the way from Victoria specially just for this event). This is surely an awesome happening at ACC also with a photo opportunity with the attending cosplayers in the area.

Gamma Rays Comics Saves the Day

Last but the not the least to drop by at this year’s FCBD is Gamma Rays Comics with Ian Westwood and his fam bam ready to serve you some special discounts and a surprise raffle draw for those attending and making the visit at the store.

If you haven’t been a frequent visitor of their shop you’ll probably didn’t notice them as they are just a stone throwaway from Palace Nova Cinemas when you take the small street of Vaughn Place along Rundle Street just passed a few blocks from Rundle Mall its way further than you’d expect but not as far as crossing the Rainbow bridge of Asgard.

You’ll immediately see the huge façade that blurts out the name of the store imbued with what made the Hulk from that familiar radiation. It’s also worth noting that if you’re avoiding huge crowds this might be the place just before you decided a second run of Avengers: Endgame before you head out.

The Fun Never Stops in Adelaide

Overall your Saturday must have been booked for a day in the city just to support the comic stores and the local fans of pop culture. Every day is a comic book day it might not be free but you’ll be sure to not go home empty handed to read something on the day home while you drive or take Adelaide Metro’s bus, tram, or event trains.

Well until the next FCBD definitely next year is going to be bigger and more celebratory from these three stores. You’ll probably be also forgotten its May the Fourth and don’t forget to greet your fellow comicbook colleagues to Live Long and Prosper when you see them until next time!
