| The upcoming Minions: The Rise of Gru would have been released by 3 July 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic they would have scheduled it for this year, 2 July 2021. Due to barring further delays and the films largely unfinished with Illumination Mac Guf’s temporary closure it was pushed further to officially released for 1 July 2022 in response to the pandemic.
But the rollout of the merchandise and tie-ins has begun since McDonald’s released the toys in November/December 2020. The releas of toys for Southeast Asia was about it until this recent unexpected second wave of Minions came out that would include the only human with Gru! |
Since this was a spinoff prequel that first introduced the Minions in the first films it would likely logical that Minions 2 would introduce a very young Gru, and how he would become that Despicable Villainy that fans would very first in Despicable Me.
There hasn’t been many merchandise, toys, or action figures based on Gru largely to the popularity of the Minions having many variations of different characters and personality of the yellow skinned creatures. But there are very few versions ever produced and there have been any produced as a Happy Meal toy.
Without Gru, there are no Minions
This could be the first time that a Gru figurine would be part of the Minions assortment, since the second Minions film would focus on his origin and early beginnings wanting to be a super villain.
The second wave of Minion assortment was quite a surprise as the first release from 2020 did not include Gru that would be considered an exclusive in other region or territory that have more characters being sold as compared to the Asian region.
Born Felonius Gru, originally introduced in Despicable Me as 50 year old adult, and did a cameo on the first Minion as an eight year old towards the end of the film. By the time the sequel had shown the trailers to reveal he was already age 12 years old.
Human among Minions
The figurine would stand the same height as the Minions that included in this series from McDonald’s Happy Meal. There are no articulation as his pose is fixed on a propelling action wearing rocket powered pair of shoes that’s accelerating with the flames coming out of his heel.
For comparison with actual action figures produced by Thinking Toys, Gru would be a little taller than the Minions. This also gives you a look of a young Felonius with the adult version which is not far off to what he would wear with the black and grey scarf complimenting the black sweater that would become his signature wardrobe.
Overall the figurine may not have unpainted details of a regular toy, since this is produced as part of a promotional item for a fast food chain you can’t have all the Minions without Gru as he’s the key character in the franchise as well as in the sequel. It would be a travesty if you missed out getting him as he is also paired with a Minion that dressed like him to have in your collection.
Minions: Rise of Gru has been delayed to be shown by 1 July 2022 and the Happy Meal toys are now available in Southeast Asia at your nearest McDonald’s store running through the month of June until 18 July 2021!
