To capitalize on the release of ‘All-New Venom' #1, which is Volume 6 in the series, Marvel has released ten variant covers, including the main one by Adam Kubert. For a regular reader, that is A LOT of cover. But the trend in “collectability” these days is that most investment-minded collectors would have the must-have covers.
Back in the day, variant covers weren’t a thing, but the 90s were those times when you saw Marvel putting out the X-Men by Chris Claremont and Jim Lee with inter-connecting covers or Image’s Gen13 having multiple covers, which was ahead of its time to spark interest in not just collecting a cover.
But it had to be something the current comics industry is doing as part of promoting either a special issue or a newly released series. Going back to the All-New Venom series was part of the first issue to drum up interest, and they just did that.
There were so many variant covers, but the one by Humberto Ramos as a gatefold cover did stand out. But when it came to the story to make readers guess who was among the four characters, which included Luke Cage. Rick Jones. Robbie Robertson. And Madame Masque, who was suspected to be the new host of Venom.
But despite the nice variant covers, readers would need to pick up the next few issues to really find out who was this new Venom. Also, in this book, someone wanted Madame Masque dead. Interesting issue to go through the pages and analyze if there will be any revelation about who the All-New Venom is, but sadly, this issue can’t get you excited, as it needs you to pick up the next title to find out.
There’s nothing but hijinks and a scene with Venom appearing and escaping after. There are so many moving parts with the narrative to suspect one of the four characters could be the new host of the symbiote. But it was cut short for the way it was framed in this issue of who done it, instead, an issue trying to make you guess you further until the pages run out and makes you want to continue with the book moving forward, was trying to hook you on a monthly journey.
Al Ewing is notable for his work on the Immortal Hulk, setting the jade giant, focusing more on the horror elements than just the usual conventional superhero genre. This is a task for A Ewing to try to make random readers get hooked to the plot of trying to find the identity of the new host of Venom. Carlos Gomez is the artist behind the pages you see in this issue, and he’s done some of the best looks for this ‘All-New Venom.’
Overall, despite all the good word behind it and 10 variant covers, it lacks the punch Al Ewing has done for the Immortal Hulk. It might sound like a lost cause, but the variant cover by Humberto Ramos is worth admiration, which makes this first issue stand out among the other titles on the shelf.
For those not hardcore into the series, once the first story arc is done, maybe you can pick up the compiled edition.
