STGCC 2009: Opening Night and Event Preview!

08.30.2009 – A few weeks ago was the start of our inspiration which is the recently concluded STGCC (Singapore Toys, Games, and Comics Convention).

It was the second pop culture event for a rich artistic culture in Singapore which was organized by the kind folks at PI Events (Play Imaginative).

The experience was overwhelming and the adventures in-between still leaves me quite an inspiration to tell you about the first day on what exactly happened on August 13, 2009.

The first day was actually reserved for the registered media where they have given the chance to conduct their interviews and a preview on what’s to expect on the day itself.

The Artist Alley is a mixed culture that probably the Philippines own medium won’t happen anytime soon that both graffiti and comic book artists could be in the same place. The diverse interest in independent comics, urban vinyl toys, and pop art in Singapore is happening now.

Earlier prior to my arrival the live mural art consists of well known Pop Art illustrators as well as honorary guests who have gathered to bring life to this awesome wall. These featured Simon Legno, Gary Baseman, Brian Bolland, Joe Ledbetter, and Tang Eng Huat each creating their signature characters which defined each one of them in this year’s STGCC!

The press media was led to the stage where the Official opening began at 6:30PM with the organizers and guest of honor Mrs. Yu-Foo Yee Shoon, Minister of State, Ministry of Community Development for Youth and Sport of Singapore.

What would a convention be without the Singapore based 501st Legion? Its where they are supporting the Make a Wish Foundation with their customized Storm Trooper helmets on exhibit. There was other cosplayer around the area during opening night some unfamiliar to the local community in the Philippines.

There where notable booths and the centerpiece for this year is from Hasbro which has movie-based G.I. Joe and Transformers promotions. Some of the exclusive products came out from the recently concluded SDCC 2009 (San Diego Comic Con International).

Nintendo has been at STGCC since its first last year and for this event they are promoting the latest Nintendo DS Lite handheld games as well as new add-ons for your Nintendo Wii game console. Mario and Luigi mascots greeted the media for some photo opportunity prior to the opening of event.

There are other properties in this year’s event are Bandai, Mattel, Playmobil, and LEGO. Of course some are new to the perspective which are some local based exhibitors like Action City, Toys R Evil, Rapid Culture, and Ugly Dolls to name a few.

The Opening Night was overwhelming though I missed the live art we’ll share you the image once STGCC is available for the public at the Exhibition Hall 401 and 402 at the Suntec Convention Centre!
