The FCBD Geekery in Singapore

Comic books have always been a rather niche market in Singapore, but recently, there have been more buzz concerning graphic novels on our tiny island.

Thanks probably to the superhero/ supernatural-related TV and movies which have proved popular with the mass-market crowd lately!

So, instead of Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) focused mainly at a local comic store called GnB Comics this year, there were two larger bookstores getting into the fray as well. They were popular book store chain, Kinokuniya and a fledgling store for the geeks, aptly named Harris Planerds. In fact, Planerds was holding the FCBD events to coincide with its official opening at the centrally Orchard Road-located 313@Somerset mall!

Of course, free comics were given away at all three places. Planerds ramped things up with special store appearances by local comic creators including Eisner-award winning artist Sonny Liew, Jerry Hinds, Shawn Yap, Koh Hong Teng, Dave Chua, JC Wong and Zhen Ye. But to Red Dot Diva, the most fun FCBD was still at GnB Comics! :D

FCBD at GnB Comics was a very local, very cozy affair amongst down-to-earth, true-blue comic lovers. It felt as if one was visiting a friend's home for a friendly weekend gathering. On that hot afternoon, eager crowds patiently waited in line and squeezed into the small store to get their free and discounted comics, and to have a chance to meet Scottish comic creator Gary Erskine. Who, by the way, greeted the fans in an awesome sexy kilt!

Red Dot Diva had a copy of "The Filth" autographed by Gary and did a quick Q&A with him on the store, which he obliged with such enthusiasm and genuine friendliness!
