| In the past twenty years, contemporary art has become accessible through local art events. One of those who has been around to promote art in open public spaces is Art in the Park, which is celebrating its 20th year, having established an identity that the local scene has firmly embraced, supporting the grassroots and the art scene.
Art in the Park started like most newly organized events that focused on the local art scene, mainly on contemporary art, which expanded to cater to emerging young talents and new art galleries that bring their own niche to the local art scene. Something “new” with a little bit of traditional has been its core identity. |
Art is subjective and can be interpreted in many forms, which makes this event continue to be relevant to a vast majority of social classes. Some of the local masses who get the word of mouth get the opportunity to open up their perspective of what art can be, and this is the reason why local events like this continue to thrive.
In the past decades, Art in the Park has been ahead of the curve, and it does not cater to “what’s the new trend,” it just continues to evolve to remain relevant by sticking to their core values and what it is trying to do in promoting art. It may sound cliché to some who still don’t have the perspective on what art is, but other than just a colourful painting or a sculpture.
Twenty years of art through diverse styles and cultures, it remains true to form that there is a community that lines up as early as 8 AM, not just to buy art, but to see familiar faces and mingle with those they have continued to remain in contact with and talk about the same appreciation for the artworks in general.
The continued growth of the local art scene through AITP has changed over the years, becoming a hub for promoting new talent as well as the established local galleries that have been around even before this art event was known. Of course, some exhibitors come and go, replaced by new faces or a newly opened gallery.
Its constant evolution from just an event held in a local part of Salcedo Village has become one of the local art scenes you put on your calendar to visit, because some of the artworks that were not sold during those past exhibits by some of the local galleries are being sold at a lower cost. It’s something for art lovers to look forward to when they collect these one-of-one paintings.
This is not just some annual event for those who appreciate art, but also a place where old friends or rare acquaintances meet because this is the only place they can see each other. It’s a definite place to go see local art galleries having their booths and artists getting to introduce themselves and hoping their works get the opportunity to be exhibited in one of those local art galleries that participated in this event.
Two decades is a long time to become an established institution, and Art in the Park has defined itself as one of the art events at the start of the year, attracting most people from various backgrounds, places, and some even travel from a different country who appreciate art and look forward to visiting and even discovering new talent that might get exposure in the international art scene.
Truly, this is not just another art event, but a place to discover and appreciate art in any form presented by those who continue to thrive and create what they are really proud of and appreciative of, which is an expression through art in this park.
“Art in the Park” is one day annual event in its 20th year, which is held at the Jaime C. Velasquez Park at Salcedo Village on March 15th from 9 AM to 10 PM local time.
