10.10.2012 – The Alternative Press Expo (APE) returns to San Francisco USA this weekend on October 13 and 14 at the Concourse Exhibition Center, 635 8th Street. The event had a successful one in 2011 having a bigger exhibit hall. APE is one of the must-attend comic book related event of the year.
The event is organized by the same company that brought you Wondercon and Comic Con International. APE is geared as an event for self-publishers, independent publishers and alternative cartoonists to showcase their books.
APE was founded by Dan Vado in 1994 and it has grown to one of the most sought after comic conventions in North America though not as big as Comic-Con International or Wondercon but it gives independent publishers the chance to showcase their works. Comic-Con International took responsibility of organizing the event since 1995. APE has gone through a lot of changes over the years moving to San Francisco and from a one day to a two day event.
As Dan Vado said "I started the APE because I felt that there was a need for a convention where the artists doing interesting work can display and promote themselves without having to drown out a 50 million watt display by some huge publisher."
Featured guests at APE 2012 include Sergio Aragonés (MAD magazine, Groo the Wanderer) in his first-ever APE appearance; Eric Drooker (Flood, Blood Song); all three Hernandez Brothers in celebration of the 30th anniversary of Love & Rockets, Gilbert, Jaime, and Mario; Ben Katchor (Julius Knipl, The Cardboard Valise), Miriam Libicki (jobnik!); and Jim Woodring (Jim, Weathercraft). All of these superstar comics creators will be featured in programs and will be signing all weekend long.
APE presents the very best in alternative, small press, and self-published comics, with an Exhibit Hall packed with cutting-edge creators. This year's Exhibit Hall features over 400 exhibitors, including some of the biggest indie comics publishers (SLG, Fantagraphics, Drawn and Quarterly, Top Shelf, Last Gasp, and many more), plus artists and DIY creators showcasing their comics, books, zines, original art, hand-made items, and much more.
APE once again features programming all weekend long. You can look forward to spotlight events featuring all of the show's special guests, plus panels devoted to other comics-oriented topics, separate hands-on workshop tracks, and the return of the popular Comic Creator Connection, where writers and artists are paired up for the opportunity to work together. The complete programming and workshop schedule is coming soon.
APE, the Alternative Press Expo happens on October 13 and 14, 2012 at the Concourse Exhibition Center in San Francisco USA.
