For those non-Whovians (term for a Doctor Who fan) the series originally aired on BBC in 1963 up to 1989. Then there was the TV film in 1996 and the series was revived in 2005 starting with Christopher Eccleston as the 9th doctor. But the most popular doctor in the modern series was David Tennant the 10th doctor. The current doctor is Matt Smith who will leave the series this upcoming Christmas Special who will be regenerated into the 12th doctor in Peter Capaldi who was announced to replace Smith in the series.
Doctor Who is a time traveling humanoid alien known as Time Lord. He explores the universe in his TARDIS a sentient time-travelling space ship. Its exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the TV series first aired. Along with a succession of companions, the Doctor faces a variety of foes while working to save civilizations, help ordinary people, and right wrongs.
