Komikon Grande | Legendary Event Activities

11.20.2019 – Komikon Grande is just a few days away which happen this weekend, which is the most anticipated comics-centric event in the country. This is the event that closes out the year with graphic novel launches, panel talks, screening of independently produced animation, films, and documentaries.

For this year Komikon Grande reaches out to the Filipino Komiks heritage honouring the past and presenting it for today’s generation. There are so many things to celebrate and be part of the experience for this event with tributes to the local greats at the same time a spotlight for the up and coming authors and illustrators. Now on its fifteenth year Komikon continues to bring the gold standard in paying tribute to what makes Filipino Komiks relevant into today’s modern digital age.

The annual event continues to bring out the best of the local creatives and what a great way to preach about Filipino Komiks is to put a big spotlight with this year’s theme dubbed “Komikon Grande: Legendary” featuring four luminaries who made their mark in the komiks community in the past that continues to create great stories & art.


If you have been a yearly visitor or first-time to Komikon it gets crazy with so many activities happening at the same time. The event continues to expand and grow and it is challenging to keep track on what’s happening from the opening of the doors to the very last day things gets busier that you get lost in all the goodness that this event has to offer every year.

To keep track on what’s going to happen this weekend here are some highlights that will give you an idea what to look forward to for “Komikon Grande: Legendary.”

Legendary Guests

• Hal Santiago
• Roni Santiago
• Rico Rival
• Jess Abrera





These four luminaries that started work in the late 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s will take center stage at this year’s Komikon Grande. They will be front and center as these legendary creatives will share their humble beginnings and talk about the ‘glory days’ of Filipino Komiks at the same time give anecdotes and advise how to make it.

They will be having panel talks and you’ll also get to meet them. Hal Santiago, Roni Santiago, Rico Rival, and Jess Abrera will certainly share their thoughts and definitely some great stories from back in the day don’t miss out this Saturday.





Komiks Launches

• Kenkoy Komiks Album ng Mga Kabalbalan Vol. 1
• The Mythology Class: Children of Bathala Vol.1

There will be so many titles going to be released at this year’s Komikon Grande, but the highlight that most would gravitate to is the release of these two graphic novels. The first one honors the heritage and celebrates its 90 years and the other is a sequel to the much awaited fantasy adventure that has been almost a year in the making. These books will be on tops of the list of the most anticipated titles that were revealed to be released at this year’s Komikon Grande.

Jay Ignacio Documentaries:

• Handidrawn and Quartered

See Julius Villanueva's "Ella Arcangel" come to life with the animation done by Mervin Malonzo. Both are from Haliya Publishing. Mervin is the creator of Tabi Po and illustrated the latest Janus Silang at ang Labanang Mananaggal - Manbabarang. Julius has created an insane number of indie comics. A few of his works are Destroyer, Richard Keso, Lif in Progress, and Native.

Jay Ignacio is featuring two of his documentaries at the Komikon Grande 2019, namely "Hand Drawn & Quartered" and Ä.Nino. Jay aldo wrote "The Merchant of Oltrarno"which is illustrated by Alex Nino, with calligraphy by Leigh Reyes. He is also known as guitarist, singer and song writer of the group DaPulis (1996-2002)

• Understanding Filipino Komiks with Randy Valiente
• Kenkoy's 90th Anniversary with Ian Velasquez

Every convention there are panel talks and these five scheduled at Conference Room BCD with Arnold Arre while the rest will be at Conference Room E that will give you some interesting information about Filipino Komiks and how they matter to most as a form of entertainment. At the same time it is also an educational line-up of panels about the early days of Komiks and the future.

Komikon Grande also gives a spotlight to the up and coming talents that will be featured in the latest edition of Sulyap Komiks graphic novel for 2019 and the line up of artists will also get interviewed and share their thought about their work featured in this soon-to-be released book.

There will be other activities happening and titles to be launched that will fill your weekend. Besides all that there are also merchandise like clothing, pins, stickers, postcards and prints to go around at this year’s event. Don’t miss out to also meet the authors and illustrators who will be signing their books like Ian Sta. Maria who will be in this event all the way from Billund, Denmark.

This event has so many surprises that you might not keep up, but if you’re ready for anything surely this is going to be a weekend to be with family, friends, and new acquaintances while you rummage and check some of the cool stuff when you can.

“Komikon Grande” Legendary” happens this weekend on 23 to 24 November 2019 from 10 AM to 8 PM at the Bayanihan Center, Unilab Compound; Pasig City. Tickets are now available in Comic Odyssey branches at a discounted price of PHP 250.00 Pesos and 1-Day tickets (PhP 150.00 Pesos) will be available on the day of the event.
