MBX Off-Road | NASA S.E.V. Chariot

07.02.2019 – Every Space Exploration needs a rover since the Apollo missions improvements on manned vehicle has been one of the key elements that became part of each lunar mission to the Moon and unmanned rovers to the surface of Mars. It has been an essential transport and research vehicle.

NASA continues to develop these surface exploration vehicles as part of research and development. Many of these vehicles have been produced as merchandise to bring up the interest in Space Exploration and Matchbox has produced one towards the tail end of 2018 and that is the NASA S.E.V. Chariot!

Developed by NASA first reveal the concept in 2007 and the design chassis of what would become the Space Exploration Vehicle (short for S.E.V.) that would be unveiled in 2009. The function of this surface mobility is to be one the main service systems NASA would integrate as part of its space missions.

Its primary function is the transport for astronauts on the surface of the Moon and Mars that would be safe for them to travel to any planetary surface. The design shows an enclosed pod that can have two passengers but will allow a maximum of four for emergencies. It doesn’t function like any Earth vehicle as it has a docking port and behind the vehicle is where the Astronaut can use their spacesuit.

Besides the safe environment that allows Astronauts can live there for fourteen days. This is not just some space rover it has a set of wheels that can allow moving sideways like a crab due to wheels rotating 360 degrees. The concept for future surface mobility vehicle is not just how to take the explorers to point A to B but also have a flexible function to maximize exploring alien worlds.

Space Chariot

Matchbox is known for producing licensed cars than fictional made-up model vehicles. For the 2018 series, they added the NASA S.E.V. Chariot that was released towards the end of that year. Although it might not have the functions of the real SEV the design aesthetics that inspired it is all there.

The new card art surely was also the selling point for its uniqueness of this diecast car. It’s a tone down version of the SEV as the real one has so many elements that weren’t enough to fit this tiny version. But the overall casting of it made it possible by the Matchbox design team to make it happen.

Rolling Surface Vehicle

The SEV Chariot appears to be too plain for its appearance that lacks the attraction not even including at least a molded astronaut suit at the back for the details. This is the challenge for toy designers when adapting real-world aesthetics based on complicated vehicles that are the usual norm.

Although not having those familiar instruments adapted in this scale it is still a novelty to appreciate something out of this world. The NASA SEV Chariot is unique all of its own and an interesting model for kids to find that inspiration although limited in the appearance from the actual one, but it surely something to pick someone’s interest if you’re into space exploration and interest in science.

“NASA S.E.V. Chariot” is part of the MBX Road-Trip Subline included in the 2018 Matchbox Series, which was acquired Toys R' Us Greenbelt 3 in Makati City for ₱ 120.00 pesos ($ 3.36 AUD | $2.35 USD**) a month-long Sale. Matchbox has retailed in the Philippines for ₱ 149.75 pesos ($4.19 AUD | $2.93 USD**) which are locally distributed in the Philippines by Rich Prime.
