Movie Review | Glass

01.20.2019 – “Glass” is an interesting subject seeing that this film turns out to be a stealth sequel to “Unbreakable” (2000) that ties up with “Split” (2016). There have been so many superhero genre films that have come and ruled the cinemas since “Unbreakable” not to forget even on television.

With “Glass” masterful connection to the two previous films M. Night Shyamalan written and directed gives closure to the project he has been pushing to create in almost two decades.

The long-awaited plan didn’t happen entirely but it gives you a perspective if superheroes exist in the real world. M. Night Shyamalan himself revealed his ideas for this film was a deconstruction of the genre as known as “East Rail 177 Trilogy” that completes the long-awaited narrative that started with “Unbreakable” introducing Mr. Glass’ first appearance as the villainy that Bruce Willis as David Dunn aka The Overseer.

The highlight of this trilogy was “Split” introducing James McAvoy as Kevin Wendell Crumb aka The Horde having 23 personalities with the 24th identity as The Beast.

“Split” was an impressive film featuring a stellar performance from McAvoy with these split personalities. Some were unaware that this film was also a sequel from “Unbreakable” with a revelation that reveals David Dunn’s cameo that seals the deal of the much-awaited sequels becoming part of that particular universe.

With “Glass” it takes further reveals what really was happening with the connection of these characters from the last two films that also show who was the true enemy behind the scenes. Samuel L. Jackson’s portrayal of Elijah Price aka Mr. Glass takes further reveal of the character a master manipulator and a genius with a frail body is certainly formidable to The Overseer.

M. Night Shyamalan weaves a spectacular narrative tie-up to a future that might open up to future films. But don’t hold your breath just yet for that as this trilogy is enough spectacles to give you an idea how interesting it was for him conceive this story under everyone’s noses. The famed director has redemption from his previous misses in the past films has gained enough positive raves with “Split” but not with “Glass” that even though it was enough to connect together these stories it doesn’t have enough fireworks but a good way to close the book on this chapter.

It was sort of an isolated case for what has happened in the grounds of the mental institution, where Glass has been a resident since the end of “Unbreakable.” But the expose by the genius of Mr. Glass made it worth revealing that the future of this universe is an open book for a possibility with a new chapter for what the future could be.

Overall “Glass” is non-stop action that not only is about superheroes but also mind-games. Critically impressive with the performance of the main cast and a solid narrative. Distributed in the Philippines from Buena Vista Entertainment now playing in Cinemas worldwide!
