Sunday Toy Bazaar | The Underground Gatherings

02.18.2019 – Garage Sales or Antique Sellers are rarely seen nowadays if you happen to grow up in the era pre-internet. Going to the old Greenhills was a nostalgia trip, but there’s nothing like a yard sale on a weekend market to add flavor to the usual food and gatherings with friends and relatives. In this consumer driven city of Manila back to back events is where you can find some these.

The usual thing nowadays is when you want to look for something it is through the internet. It is the trend but it also reduces social interaction to zero. But there’s a little movement that is making that happen again with these handful of sellers.

Recently, there’s a place that has been an unlikely venue for these gatherings and that’s where you’ll probably find that collectible you’re looking for.

The event was called “Toy Bazaar” and the name has been too common that even when one of the McDonald’s stores want to clear out their excessive stock of leftover toys from a previous toy promotion they would also call it by its title that has been their thing several years ago. But there hasn’t been any “McDo Toy Bazaar” recently but it also depends which store would let go their old toys.

Going back to this “Toy Bazaar” that was organized by a handful of sellers is not just selling old Happy Meal toys, but also some odd action figures that you may have lost growing up. Some are unique that they were like available yesterday.

So far these sellers started organizing this event at the start of 2019 and it has become sort of a regular thing every Sunday. If you haven’t been to this place see some photos taken from the recently concluded event below:

From plastic soldier figurines to rare toys from almost two decades ago you’ll probably find it here than the usual event held inside an air conditioned mall. It’s something different when it was held outdoors it takes you back to the time when things were simple. Small toy gatherings with face-to-face interaction are rarely a thing now with social media. But these sellers are trying their best at going back to that novelty lifestyle pre-internet age.

It’s also a good environment to get to know people without the wall of digital technology. You can say it’s not just a nostalgia thing, but human interaction can’t be replaced with how communication can be done with face-to-face meet-ups and this might be the place for those true community groups to try and be more outdoorsy.

At first, it would feel awkward but when you browse on each table it simply hits you how going to this place used to be the “normal” thing back in the Philippines that is still an active lifestyle in some countries. This is not the last they’ll be having these interactions come join them on the next Sunday. In a not-so normal type of venue they gather at Arkipelago, a place where there’s a lot of food establishments and live bands perform every night.

If you’re not familiar of the place the map provided may help you find them HERE!
