TMNT 2012 Series | Mikey Turflytle

02.12.2019 – By now the latest series from Nickelodeon is the “Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”, a re-imagination of the TMNT animated series. Following the end of its 2012 series the studio behind the hit show introduce a different kind of TMNT series on 2 March 2017 that will be fresh and geared toward a new audience.

Although the 2012 series has been replaced by this new adventures of this TMNT that is unfamiliar to longtime fans that doesn’t mean the toys would eventually be gone from shelf space. Some of the later waves were repackaged and older ones went up on clearance like Mike Turflytle!

For those who followed the 2012 TMNT series that lasted 124 episodes stretching to 5 seasons is considered a gold standard in longevity of an animated series. In those episodes like any animated series it’s a common thing to consider tie-up merchandise related to an appearance of a particular character or one of the main characters in a different costume or a variation of armor.

This concept has been around dating back to the golden age of the 1980s cartoon like Master of the Universe having different version of He-Man or Skeletor. Even the old TMNT series from 1988 even have so many versions of Michelangelo and his three brothers. But back then some of this versions didn’t have on-screen appearance that are sometimes oddly weird and unique to make it as a canon in a particular episode.

The 2012 TMNT series has refined that concept in selling action figures through the appearance of the main characters in their variation of a standard costume on-screen. Such example is Mikey Turflytle, a costume of Michelangelo dressed as a butterfly, which was explained at the back of the packaging that he suit up using homemade materials from pizza boxes as part of his wings, with extra tubes as his arms and glove hands to mimic his appearance. Though some who have seen the episode “The Mutation Situation” from the first episode of season 2, that debut this costume to lure April O’Neil’s mutated father now flying Kirby Bat after being doused with mutagen and falling to his death surrounded by bats.

Mikey Turflytle wasn’t a one-off appearance, but he’s a turtle flying bat bait attached to Raphael’s glider. The action figure takes queues to the animated appearance with little detail. Like most of the figures produced by Playmates Toys they look impressive but lacking much detail in some accessories that came with the figure like the goggles Mikey wears. There’s not much accessories aside from his butterfly wings, goggles, and signature nunchuks.

The extra tube arms and glove hands are not removable which also lack details on the aesthetics. The goggle is made of soft plastic same with the extra arms with glove hands. The fly wings is one solid piece that you attach at the back of Mikey’s shell where there is a slot-like clip and it doesn’t have any moving parts. The Mikey figure takes more animated appearance if you compare to the first wave Michelangelo figure with noticeable different down to comparisons of both figures foot. You’ll also notice the elbow and knee pads are more elaborate in animated detail.

Although you accessorize Mikey with the Turflytle costume it doesn’t hinder the articulation having Swivel Neck, Hinge Shoulder, Hinge Hips, and Hinge Knees. The cartoonish aesthetics makes this figure stand out from the basic early release of Michelangelo unless you get a recent one that the only difference is the Turflytle wing slot at this figure’s back is not available in the standard figure to use this accessory.

Overall expressive appearance of Mikey as the avenging Turflytle certainly jumps out from the animated series. But if you’re not a fan of the character it doesn’t hold much to getting one to merit a space in your display cabinet unless you’ve seen the episodes that gravitates you to hunt down this figure.

What lack though are the details on the goggles and the extra tube arms with glove hands they’re not articulated just hanging there on Mikey’s side not even removable unlike the wing. This als includes unpainted bandage wraps on the figure's fingers that is present detail on the basic Michelangelo. The same goes to the wing that is one solid piece that has minimal movement due to the clip connector at the figure’s back.

Unless you’re a hardcore TMNT fan wanting to get all Mikey’s appearance made into an action figure from the series this will stand nicely in your display. But for someone who just blindly thinks “it’s a cool action figure” it is not worth getting and it is all up to you how you really need this version of Mikey.

Mikey Truflytle is part of the last waves of TMNT figures based on the 2012 TMNT series manufactured by Playmates Toys, and it’s retailed at PhP 549.75 pesos ($15.00 AUD in Australia). This was on clearance at PHP 350.00 pesos ($9.40 AUD in Australia)
