NOVA | 9th Anniversary Group Show

05.16.2019 – In the early 2010s the booming art gallery scene in the Philippines has started to sprout all over Metro Manila. This produced and promoted the artistry for the best of the brightest talents that are making a name in foreign countries abroad.

This also gave birth to art events shows that not only catered to the traditional art form, but reinvigorated the interest thanks to these local galleries. Nova Gallery Manila is one of those haven that put the names to their works and their passion for the arts that had recent celebrated its ninth anniversary.

Who would have thought the art scene revolution in the Philippines would be stuck there and almost forgotten? Without this local art houses there won’t be any names like Reen Barera, Tyang Karyel, Quiccs, Dee Jae Pa’Este, and even Mr. S to name a few popular contemporary artists in the 21st century.

These artists won’t be sought after if not for the art galleries and also the artists themselves where, both work hand in hand that cultivated an interest in collecting art that produced a market in the first place. Some of them are also street artists that would see their work in the walls of high rise commercial buildings if not for the build-up of their careers through these art galleries.

Nova Gallery Manila is one of them, but not as widespread word of mouth type of galleries. This place may be underrated with the presentation, but when you get to know the curators. They’re good people to hang out with not just about talking things anything art-related but just usual everyday people you can relate with.

Nine years since they opened their doors it is one of the crowded art galleries this side of Makati City. They hosted group shows, solo show, and even special events unrelated to the usual day-to-day art shows. They recently celebrated with a group show featuring the artists that graced and became known through the local scene.

To celebrate their continuous growth and promoting the grassroots here are the #NOVA9thBESTART that stood out from the rest of the pack not in order…

“TLC” by Humbly, you’ll immediately see because Tinder happened and expresses a tongue out emoji characters all-original creation by the artist that you’ll definitely say a tender loving care for his continuous growth as a visual artist.

“Institutional Bola” by Kris Abrigo, is both an art and an installation having a basketball ring and painted art that is a backboard certainly defines his colourful style as an artist who have graced the hallowed halls of Nova Gallery.

“Subway Station” by Mr S (Sasquatch), it is unlike any other art style that continuous to grow. Mr S has been more about childish eye popping work. For this one it was based on actual photo with Nova’s curator, Pat Frades during their Hong Kong trip.

“Things you Do For Love” by Reen Barera, from handmade heads to moving figurines Reen has come a long way from just an artist. He’s still as humbled as any artists who never forgets his beginnings and continues to evolve as what he adores.

“Happy Boy” by John Hey, is new to the contemporary art scene but slowly got new followers to his first installation. He is certainly a happy boy with his new character that we’ll definitely see a bright future for this up and coming artist.

“Of Love and Fear” by Cheryl Owen, shows intricate details and impressive style that shows beauty and grace at the same time let your thought wonder how simplicity is defined at the same time caught you disarmed by this painting.

"Pom" by Terenz, is like taken from an anime series that just about right there being as interesting to look at the same time find it underrated to be left unnoticed. It just the way you get that perspective that you should see at Nova.

“The Farther One Travels. The Less one Knows” by Cinos, is a 3D art if you can see how well it is crafted at the same time is also an installation. Poignantly humorous depending on whose preference it is eye catching to see it in person.

“Disenchanted” and “Is this It?” by Rubik Tabafunda, is actually two pieces of art because of the way it is represented in this group show. The dead mice looks real but it is not and without the painting the installation won’t made it that much interesting.

Honorable Mentions

There are impressive works of art that can’t be in the list but they are are honorable not to be mentioned and yet you’ll find this appealing to see how they made Nova Art Gallery Manila the way it carved itself an identity and these made the list too…

“Twisted Mental” by Tyang Karyel won’t be mentioned if you’ve seen her colourful works that with a simple piece is impressive that continues to find her groove the way the tank art rolls like a boss.

“Hacker” by AADA, a moving installation that cements itself to be a signature style of how he represents this type of perspective both inviting at the same time makes you want to stare for hours the way its art flows into your screen.

“DAWMNMAGNETO” by Quatro Hapimeel, is an art installation that’s thought provoking that challenges your preference and at the same time tests your interpretation of this work as one of his contributions for this anniversary show.

Ninth Anniversary Group Show runs from May 15 to 22, 2019 at the Nova Gallery. For more about upcoming shows follow Nova Gallery on Social media via Facebook and Instagram!
