02.14.2011 – In every toy produced in the 20th century there will always be a heritage and a story behind it. You can’t dismiss every action figure or any particular toy not having its own history if you’re just collecting them. For the Radio Flyer Wagon, there is a story behind it having been around for almost 90 plus years.
The Radio Flyer as a company has produced countless iterations and variations of the “Little Red Wagon” for every American kid. This toy is already an icon to itself not tied to any media-related medium. Now, this wagon is immortalized as a Hot Wheels car! |
In 1996, Hot Wheels introduced the Radio Flyer Wagon, which is a custom-built version that has a “butterfly” drag-style steering wheel that is powered by a rear-mounted engine with a spoiler. Only Hot Wheels can produce this type of die-cast car and make it look radical.
You can never see the Radio Flyer Wagon without this enhancement ever again. It is of course designed by Larry Wood, a longtime Hot Wheels designer who is considered the granddaddy who has been in the company from its earlier days. This die-cast car is already almost 15 years old and still as iconic as the real Radio Flyer Wagon the most recent version was released in 2008.
Draggin’ Wagon
Every current Hot Wheel released for 2010 or 2011 now depicts an image of the model in the packaging, but since this was released in the mid-90s you can only see an image of a rear an unknown car revving up the rear tires for a burnout. This is applied to all the models released in that particular year.
Meanwhile, on the card back you see that the Hot Wheels brand is promoting their signature “Hot Wheels Race Track System” as well as making it into your indoor diorama playset that has been part of the brand’s identity.
The Radio Flyer Wagon is packaged in an appropriate blister bubble secured for you to either keep it mint or open this to take a closer look. Of course, the majority would keep it on the card. But for the Hot Wheels collector that appreciates the tactile feel of each model is worth taking a closer look.
Hot Rod Wagon
The designs for this souped-up Radio Flyer Wagon definitely stand out in its signature red colors compared to its succeeding color variations that were produced over the years. This is actually a variant introduced with a different set of wheels. But it suits this well compared to the old-style type of spokes.
This die-cast car may look like it was released 15 years ago, but it just aged well with the red bright colors against the chrome plastic that shines well. It may look unrealistic for a wagon to be driven in real life, but it sure gives you the idea that concepts like this can be actually made in the real world just like the Twin Mill car, which is a Hot Wheels Original that became a real car in 2001.
Overall, the Radio Flyer Wagon may come in different colors with two other different names over the last 15 years. But there’s nothing like the iconic “Little Red Wagon” that’s almost a hundred years old, and the Hot Wheels brand made it even more popular by making their own version that featured a huge engine on the back with a single-seat on the front that’s about to shoot like a rocket.
“Radio Flyer Wagon” is numbered 9 of 12 models introduced as part of the “First Editions” sub-series for the mainline as part of the Hot Wheels cars produced in 1996, and this was acquired at one of the local Toyfair events in 2010, which originally retails at ₱ 99.75 Pesos ($ 2.26 USD). Hot Wheels is locally distributed by Richwell Global Inc in the Philippines.
