Converse + Komiks: Punk Your Chucks!

09.22.2013 – Converse is an iconic brand which was founded for more than a hundred years and its resurgence in the new century signifies its identity as an Urban Lifestyle shoe tapping professionals in the skateboard community as its brand ambassadors.

Chuck Taylor All-Star became their iconic product and basketball shoes which were named after a well-known athlete who would possibly be the first to have his name on those sneakers. It was popularized by Converse and its the face of the brand.



Yesterday the event brings you the renowned sneakers getting customized by Filipino graphic artists who co-created Dark Colony and Trese.

Dark Colony’s Bow Guererro and JB Tapia with Kajo Baldisimo of Trese were the featured artists for Converse x Komiks: Punk Your Chucks tie-up with their “Shoes Buy Art, Sneakers Create It” that showcases how sneakers can be a natural medium to create wearable art.

The creators of Dark Colony JB Tapia and Bow Guererro punk’d some pairs of Chuck Taylor All-Star shoes to lucky fans having their characters become part of the owner’s sneakers. Kajo the artist for Trese also had his hands on a pair of red and white chucks that was customized featured Trese and the Kambals faces drawn on both sides of the shoes and there were only a selected few people will get their sneakers having the characters from a local comic book series in Dark Colony and Trese customized in these Converse Chuck Taylor All-Star shoes.





















“Converse has always recognized the inherent creativity of our core market,” said Eli Bonsol, Converse advertising and Marketing Manager. “Our most iconic sneaker, the Chuck Taylor All-Star, has always embodied this aspect of the brand – the fact that it is literally made of canvas makes it the perfect backdrop to express your own style.”

Bow Guerrero who’s works of art appearing in Dark Colony was like a happy kid in a candy store getting the chance to own a pair on Converse at the same time sharing his passion for drawing the characters says “Filipinos love art, and express this love in truly imaginative ways,” he explained. “The timeless, laid-back style of the Converse All-Star really appeals to komiks lovers – not to mention that it is customizable in so many different ways.” Which makes the bond between Filipino Komiks and Converse is an intuitive one.

JB Tapia and Kajo Baldisimo were also hard work in customizing their versions of the Chuck Taylor All-Star shoes. All three artists’ creations stand out with its unique comic book appeal with a touch of Filipino culture and their signature.



















The mechanics of the customization set up at the venue which allowed visitors and Converse enthusiasts to alter their shows according to their taste. Markers, pens, and even metal studs were on-hand to achieve that perfect punk rock vibe. There were ten lucky guests given the chance to get their Chuck Taylor All-Star sneakers “punk’d” by Bow Guererro, JB Tapia and Kajo Baldisimo.

The “live-paint” customization by the artists where held at the Converse flagship store in Glorietta 2 which also have sample display of their customized Chuck Taylor All-Stars accompanied by their works near the entrance of the store.

Converse stores across the nation will soon be having their own “Punk Your Chucks” areas, where you can trick out your Chucks, Cons, or Jack Purcells – or if you don’t have a pair yet you can check out all the designs at the flagship store in Glorietta 2, Makati.
