AVCon 2018 | Closing Day Highlights

07.23.2018 – The last day for Adelaide’s Video and Game Festival (AVCon) has so many things to see and interact with exhibitors. Not to mention you can also participate in their interactive activities or see some interesting activities. The major draw of course is the show floor.

There are countless interesting things to see at this year’s AVCon and they certainly packed the Adelaide Convention Centre with quite the show it was. For the fans wanting to meet the guests you get to see them in person and get your autographs too.

From Anime and Video game-related merchandise AVCon has it including weapon props for aspiring cosplayers one vendor based in Melbourne can provide it. This event is a veritable nerd culture’s haven for everything that is thematically related to this annual convention.

You can bet there are also independent game developers too that promote their works and upcoming games that you’ll probably find it here. University of South Australia is one of the schools that provide courses related to game developing. It’s impressive to see all the old school game consoles and coin-op arcades in one roof.

Major sponsors that has been part of AVCon like Nintendo is ever so present in bringing upcoming games that hasn’t hit the local retail shelves can now be played here. This year has offered more stuff to see and interact to a gamer and anime fan’s delight. It is also a gathering of local communities as well to meet the face behind the characters they use in their profiles in gaming and forums.

When you made it past the gaming hall that have all the independent game developers, universities, and old school arcade game units you’ll enter where the merchandise area is located. At the same time there are booths that promote their upcoming events as well as places you can visit and here are those exhibitors.

Madman Entertainment

Upon entering the area where you can find the merchandise a Titan’s inflated head will greet you from Attack on Titan, which is part of Madman Entertainment’s set up. For those who have heard of Madman they are the company that usually distributed English subtitled anime and Japanese live action series.

They have a wide range of selections from Blu-ray to DVD editions. They are also the ones that distribute films too that are screened in cinemas across Australia. Madman has been part of AVCon and will continue to be one of the booths that will be there.

Nintendo

There’s much interaction with the Nintendo booth this year as compared to last year with only one game announced to be released. This time they are in full force with the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo DS XL game console heavily promoted. The new games and exclusive editions are on display.

You can also take home some souvenirs which are FREE posters from the games being launched in this event namely Mario Tennis Aces, Mario Kart Deluxe and Sushi Striker to name a few of those featured that everyone tried playing. Parents and kids interact as you see in the images that is quite an interesting scene.

Greenlight Comics Of course, this will be their first time to be part of AVCon. The ‘New Kid’ in the comicbook scene just turned two years old in the recent Free Comic Book Day last May 2018 and the shop not only sells graphic novels they also host community gatherings in their store. From Dungeons & Dragons game night to Gundam meet-ups where you get to learn the basic set up in assembling a model kit Greenlight Comics definitely is about the nerd culture in South Australia. They are probably the premier in also supporting the local self-publishing community with regard to local comics too.

Marion Libraries

The City of Marion has three libraries in their area from Park Holme, Marion Library at the back of Westfield Marion, and Cove Civic Centre. This must be their first event to participate at AVCon and if you’re in the area of Marion you might want to drop by and check out the books they have.

Registration to get a library card is absolutely free when you visit any of the three places. What they are promoting this month is getting everyone to read graphic novels as they are also giving away interesting books as wells as bookmarks, stickers, and a personalized pins from some of the old book pages.

Southern Dewback Garrison

The Stormtrooper community that promote certain advocacies and inspiring those who are in need are also seen in Adelaide. The Southern Dewback Garrison 501st Legion is present at this year’s AVCon.

You won’t miss the gigantic LEGO mosaic as well as Star Wars themed booth, where you’ll see a small Darth Vader statue offering a candy that the bowl this figure holds. You can find them nearby the artist area. They are practically the counterparts from the Philippines’ Pinoy 501st and Singapore’s Vader’s Fist 501st Garrison.

Cosplayers of AVCon

These are just some of the participating booths you’ll ever see at AVCon and if you missed out this year chances are you’ll see them back for 2019. Besides the interesting booths you’ll find that there are also cosplayers you’ll meet and interact that is also the attraction for this event.

You can find your favorite characters from anime and video games, but you’ll surprise also to find that pop culture characters from beloved TV series from the 1980s can be seen too not to forget superheroes from American culture.

Closing Ceremonies & Auction

The event’s closing ceremonies starts with an auction and then a closing remark to the organizers and special guests with special performances is the usual theme for AVCon and for this year was remarkable as ever.
