Archivo 1984 | Balatkayo

10.14.2018 – Mervin Malonzo has succeeded what other artists have dreamed of. A solid following from his early days of online graphic novel series “Tabi Po” that was produced in print, which also sold out on the first two volumes of that popular series.

Then a successful television series based on the same name that put him in the map. Now Mervin challenges himself crossing over to the contemporary art scene in bringing “Balatkayo” to life as his first show ever bound to be another success.

Its hard to break into the industry no doubt about that, but Mervin was patient enough to cultivate a cult following in making “Tabi Po” happen and he never ask for it that was years of patience which definitely paid off. It wasn’t produced in less than two years and people gradually accepted his works this was a journey and evolution.

After gaining graphic novel status producing three volumes of “Tabi Po” some rare collaborations and a hit horror series exclusively aired on Cignal TV what’s next for Mervin Malonzo? It has been a plan to create his own paintings something to keep him challenge and it took him three months to produce all this.

Mervin continue to impress his followers and keep evolving at the same time staying to his roots of being a graphic novel storyteller and artist. With “Balatkayo” it takes him further from what people used to see in him. Being a comic book artist is not the end all be all and once you make it the creativity never stops.

“Balatkayo” has in English doesn’t have a definite word its “Camouflage,” “Disguise,” or “costume” as translated by sites trying to give an exact word. But the artworks represented its more like shedding the outer skin and revealing the true nature of each painting’s personality, while sticking to Mervin’s horror genre it gives you a new perspective from someone who wants your hair stand.

Details of all his paintings are striking giving you chills and making you feel uncomfortable with that kind visual that definitely is something new to the contemporary art scene by a graphic novel artist.

Mervin shares it was a lot of challenge to put this together and three months was all worth the effort balancing in managing Halaya publication at the same time making his effort in writing new stories.

There are more comic books in the works he shares as of this writing Komiket is still happening and his presence will be there all of Sunday. But there’s new works coming out and teases “wait `til you see them at Komikon” which happens a month from now and definitely Mervin will continue to shred his skin and further evolve like the stories he shared also like the creatures he created.

“Balatkayo” is Mervin Malonzo’s first ever art exhibit at Archivo 1984, which runs until 7 November 2018. For more about Mervin’s upcoming works follow him through his social media on Facebook, Instagram and on Twitter.
