Movie Review | Aquaman
The fish out of the water has a lot to tell as the character has evolved over the years from a guy who speaks with marine animals to Jason Momoa’s badass portrayal what’s not to like?
In the Philippines, the lead actors and its director descended in Manila as the film’s second leg of their Asian tour. Not to overshadow the film’s true perspective Aquaman has been heralded to be one of DCEU’s hopeful films away from the days of its previous dark films. The character itself was ridiculed in the past having been considered underrate and misunderstood properties from DC Comics.
Aquaman has had its various origins being introduced in the Silver Age comics of the 1950s and 1960s that has been retold in different stories. But this film is based from the New 52 origin with an introduction of the character streamlined for the general audience not to be confused with the previous iteration of the character. In all honesty, Aquaman is also one of the challenging comic books characters to be adapted for the big screen with his own huge world.
An Oceanful Backstory
You don’t need to go back to the previous films that introduced the character all you need is to catch this one without the need to be spoiled by the plot. Entirely, there’s a bountiful narrative waiting to be told about the world of Aquaman. But for now, all you need to see is his origin and why is he important an integral member of the Justice League.
This world may be visually impressive, but it’s not as perfect as you’d expect. Story-wise its’ something much needed to be work on, but entirely a fun trope with intense action sequence on a grand scene of things that definitely an extravagant of how Atlanta portrayed without the need to actually dive deep into the sea to believe it. But entirely with James Wan’s direction and guided hand Aquaman swims in ease laying down the foundation and introducing this side of the DCEU.
A Man from the Sea
Jason Momoa’s stellar portrayal of Arthur Curry has been on point since his character introduced in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice along with Amber Heard’s Lady Mera. The evolution from edgy rough drinking superhero to King of Atlanta has been quite a challenge, but Momoa pulls all the stops in portraying the character and its development to a respectable hero that everyone deserves.
The chemistry between Momoa and Amber Heard is cemented in this film sans the flawed dialogue with a predicted cliché where both characters direction has been a good mix of humor. Heard’s character is not just your princess in distress this girl can kick some bad guys back to Sicily. Women portrayal in films has become not just for glamour and Mera certainly shows that the character can hold on her own.
Keeps on Swimmin’
Although visually grand with its CGI sized perspective of Atlanta it’s not for everyone’s delight. Not everyone would find Aquaman as interesting as the other DC characters like Batman or Wonder Woman, but Jason Momoa has redeemed this character’s portrayal from the previous iteration, not just a hero that can talk to fish and it's definitely changing the way you’ll respect this Fishman from Atlanta.
Aquaman’s intense action scenes and epic battles are something we’ve seen before, but Wan takes in stride making this a fun film to watch besides its flaws and questionable pace. DC might have another successful franchise to take care of now following that lady from the Amazon. The whole family will definitely enjoy this one as it delivers a subtle message about the environment and throwing your garbage in the sea which actually reflects reality.
Overall Aquaman is a fun film entirely grand that everyone can enjoy seeing it despite the enormous length and pace of the film drawing inspiration on the elements from other films. It’s outrageously good visually and with Jason Momoa’s Arthur Curry evolving from that rough shirtless dude to respectable Atlantean it’s already making Box Office returns in China while the world waits.
Just a tip not to leave the cinema while the credits roll as there's a mid-credit scene reveal that you need to see.
“Aquaman” now playing in Philippine cinemas since 12 December 2018 and is also showing in Australia beginning 13 December 2018. For a complete list of release dates in other countries when it will be shown check out the list HERE!
