Movie Review | The Rise of Skywalker

12.21.2019 – Finally, it is the last chapter of the nine-part Skywalker Saga. The film has very limited release in the Philippines from 20 22 December 2019 due to the annual MMFF (Metro Manila Film Festival), but had enough window for most Star Wars to see in the big screen before it gets replaced by locally produced films that is featured throughout the Holiday Season. The Rise of Skywalker resumes local screen date in the country by 8 January 2020.

It was one of the most anticipated films to close the saga; the other was from Marvel’s highly successful Infinity Saga that closed out with Avengers: Endgame that was shown in late April 2019. For Star Wars, it was a different emotional ride that nearly divided the fandom after The Last Jedi (2017). This time around since JJ Abrams back in the director’s chair fans hope that it will right the ship from the previous film.

The Rise of Skywalker is now perfect and most would suggest lowering your expectations to see this due to the ramifications of the previous film.

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD! If you have not seen “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”, please avoid reading this review. If you’ve seen it or want to be spoiled then continue.

Like any third-part arching saga it is challenging to end a great story on a high note. Only few handful films had succeeded this in a resounding good note. But for TROS it was not what you’d expect it to be, but it did what it had to do end in a satisfying narrative. For what it is the important thing you should know is that the satisfaction of closing the narrative was the priority, while the rest fell into place even though the pacing and the overall story was not what everyone would expect. The actors have done their superb performance, which is magnified the success value and that is to be entertained for those who were not hardcore fans.

What the general public is looking forward to is the last competition of a three-part narrative that begun with The Force Awakens (2015), although the majority of its passionate fans where not nearly impressed it was good enough to wrap almost all the loose ends while leaving room for a different story to set a new Star Wars film by 2022 as for now fans had to contend with catching The Mandalorian on Disney’s streaming service and everyone is fine with that.

The ending of course for this saga is a bit of a cliché in how Rey would move forward knowing who she really is and not just some anybody being really somebody. There were enough moments to keep you at your seat and the action was just enough, but the lead away to the next scene was clunky in how the narrative flowed. It was a rollercoaster that lost most of its wheels to fully comprehend the overarching story.

But overall TROS was satisfying narrative that gave what the fans wanted, but not overtly too fan service. It was enough the general public would appreciate for completing the third trilogy in the Skywalker Saga. Perfection is not on this film’s side as there are mixed reactions. Although the total ending was given to make sure everyone would be satisfied on the finale that would leave some an after taste that they’ll never forget for others enough to fill their Star Wars need.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was shown briefly in the Philippines from 20-22 December 2019 and will resume in cinemas on 8 January 2020 while it is still showing across Southeast Asia since 20 December 2019 with the rest of the world HERE world from Walt Disney Studios distributed in Australia.
