Captain Steel appears in Earth 2 #13 a Filipino!
Filipino culture or individual has made it to American mainstream in comics. But this one is something unique as the grandsons of the original Commander Steel where not entirely Filipino but since DC Entertainment has rebooted their universe things where changed.
The golden age original Green Lantern in Alan Scoot from the late 1930s was the first character to have his origins as wells as sexual preference changed from being the straight guy who had an alien daughter he’s now openly gay. It had garnered media attention since Marvel had it first back in the 1990s when the super team Alpha Flight had one character known as North Star revealed to be gay and had recently got married in Astonishing X-Men #50 last year.
As they say change is definitely good or bad depends on everyone’s perception and as for Captain Steel it’s something of a refreshing attention to the character. Though it’s not as Earth shattering as the Death of Superman in 1992, Steel is added to the growing roster of Filipino characters appearing in American mainstream comics albeit hero, villain or a supporting character it’s a good way to make reference of the country.
DC Comics makes an exception in bringing one of their characters having changed its origins to a Filipino is getting a positive media attention to their publication.
