MIBF 2019 | First Day Highlights & More
There were so many things happened on the first day at MIBF and it started with the weather that reigned down everyone’s parade late in the afternoon. People from all walks of life and far distances arrived on the entrance of the SMX Convention center.
It has been two years since MIBF expanded taking over the upper halls that is now occupied by the Pop Hub event this weekend. But the extension of exhibitors can also be found in this floor. It is where you can find Comic Odyssey, Visprint Inc, Summit Media, and other publishing houses that have graphic novels and children’s books.
Disappeared like a Shadow Witness
Visprint is going gangbusters with the much anticipated and most awaited chapter for Trese and her family with the 7th book Shadow Witness being sold out in matter of hours past 2 PM. There were 300 pieces gobbled up by rabid fans of the soon-to-be adapted into animated series for Netflix.
There were A LOT of people holding their breath and hoping they will still get copies of the book, which was restocked straight from the printing press. The flip of the pages just to browse over gives you that sensational smell of a newly printed book.
Besides this title the third chapter of the Filipino Heroes League is also available along with Manix Abrera’s Bertong Bad Trip. But among the three newly released titles from Visprint it was Trese: Shadow Witness that everyone was waiting for.
Bargain Finds for the Right Kind
If you’re on a tight budget chances are there are books and magazines for you. Summit Media, which recently release Ian Sta. Maria’s Salamangka is on a clearance for previous published materials. It might be interesting for some to find that remaining copies of Jomike’s Foldabots Books are now selling for a fraction for what it was sold for and it is a great bargain indeed.
Besides that some other stuff like the Chico and Delamar second books as well as Hue Manila coloring books are also on clearance should you wander to the Summit Media’s bargain side of their booth.
Huge Crowd Pleaser of the Day
There are so many things happening at the same time, but the most crowds that are at the Viva booth feature some young local celebrities. Event Comic Odyssey proprietor Sandy Sansolis was eave dropping to take a look at the young crowd waiting for their stuff to get signed by these young talents.
The other pleaser is Comic Odyssey, the only co0mic shop that started participating at MIBF since 2013. They have most of their back issue bins filled with nostalgia titled from the 1990s like some issues of Superman Funeral for a Friend, Jim Lee’s first issue of X-Men #1, and some recently released issues of like second prints House of X and Powers of X (10) are also available.
Most of the young adults were looking for Doctor Strange tissues and Wave’s appearance on The Agents of Atlas series. Most of those who were looking forward to the books mentioned have decided to go on the first day to avoid what will happen for the next few days.
The first day was one and done for most who have already shopped, but there will be more interesting activities and sightings of book bargains happening for those who haven’t made their trip.
For those looking forward to getting their copies of Trese, you won’t miss out as they have stocks ready. The only things you need to do after acquiring the book is looking for the creators of the book as both are not in Manila right now. Just don’t spoil the book for everyone as suggested by Budjette Tan himself.
