Secret Fresh | Bryan Yabut's Throwback

09.10.2019 – Bryan Yabut has been synonymous with his works that depicts the dead and mostly has something to do with skulls. His first solos show at Secret Fresh “Playful Imagination” was something to do with that and some interesting about his affinity with collecting toy that depicted some of his LEGO minifigures as art.

This time around you’ll be surprise a refreshing take on his art style namely the skulls are not around, but only his fresh take on his passion growing up with popular culture explored through his most recent solo show with Secret Fresh that has nostalgia written all over it dubbed “Throwback!”

All the pieces he teased for the past several months on his Istagram has finally come together to give you some serious “Throwback” that is populated the Sixinch Gallery from top to bottom you’ll be sent back to the simple times of that era where Yabut has grown up from. From the 1970s Super Robots to the Paranormal Heroes featuring The ‘Real’ Ghostbusters it’s worth noting that each one is represented in his latest works.

When you enter the Sixinch Gallery you’ll be welcomed by the first three artworks that featured the Smurf’s Clumsy and the famous Italian plumbers of New York that put Nintendo in the map with Mario and Luigi.

Art and Some Toys

Besides the eye-catching coloful artworks you’ll immediately noticed some old toys from Byan’s childhood that he has shared on social media. Most of them are from Kenner’s Ghostbusters that have some didn’t age gracefully due to fading colors and being played by the artist himself in his youth.

The biggest piece that would probably get your attention is Ernie and Bert from Sesame Street. The two best friends are 60 x 24 inches individually that will certainly be inseparable if an art collector decide to take this home. The next ones can best describe how Bryan’s youth was shaped through Beavis and Butthead along with a portrait of the Simpsons Family. Upon making it to the second level there are eight framed images of hand art by the artist that resonate his childhood.

They are basically images of characters from Saturday morning cartoons that have Lion-O from Thundercats, He-Man from Masters of the Universe, Voltes V, Godzilla, E.T., Vincent (Hiei in Japan) of Ghost Fighter (Yu Yu Hakusho), and Slimer from Ghost Busters to name a few characters you’ll find in this part of the gallery.

Gallery of Pop Culture

The last three portraits can be seen toward the end part of the gallery namely Scooter from “Challenge of the Gobots”, Stay Puff Marshmallow Man another Ghosbutsers characters, and the MTV logo that has been popular whenever it is being flashed on the television screen has been a big part of the artists as well as that shaped the popular culture world.

The impressive works takes a different perspective from Bryan Yabut in comparisons to his trademark skulls. It’s something of a new look and style for the artists that continues to evolve and grow with his works that keeps him challenged to take on new projects at the same time an inspiration from his youth that is truly a “Throwback.”
