X-Men #1 | Summers Family Values

10.17.2019 – The “Dawn of X” is finally arrived in X-Men #1 with Jonathan Hickman, Leinil Francis Yu, Gerry Alanguilan, and Sunny Gho. If you’ve followed Jonathan Hickman’s well-detailed and reviving prominence of the X-Men brand through the “House of X” and “Powers of X” (pronounced as Powers of Ten) in the past months run surely you’ll be anticipating this issue too.

There’s so much to take in if it hasn’t sunk in what has been re-established that Krakoa is now an island nation and things are going bananas on this first issue as there will be more revelation for the next series coming out in the next few weeks. But with X-Men #1 this is surely more focused on the characters than just a big event. It gives you the perspective of one Scot Summers and how he lives his life with his family and friends.

If you missed out on all things X in the two six-issue miniseries expect a compiled graphic novel to catch up. For now, you got to pick-up X-Men #1 to give you a closer look and spotlight Scott Summer and his complicated that has been having too much drama in the last fifty years as we say “clean house.”

But before going forward to keep in mind the potential spoilers on this issue in case you haven’t acquired a copy of X-Men #1 and if you’re game for some interesting surprises do read with caution…

At the opening pages, a young Cyclops deals with the fear of opening his eyes due to his powerful optic blasts but has been guided by Professor X to be not afraid as to his surprise that the ruby quartz glasses worked. Jumping to the present Storm and Cyclops with Magneto and Polaris deals with the remaining Orchis faction that failed when the mother mold went plummeting to the sun, where this time around the remaining key figures had to make sacrifices in leveling their fight with the mutants.

Clearly, they were outmatched by the X-Men as victory hailed Magneto a hero after they returned in the island nation of Krakoa. While Cyclops and Polaris discuss their lives in fighting for the mutant kind’s survival in having a ‘normal’ life not hunted by death. He invites Polaris to his family’s reunion but declined as he departs.

By the next few pages, the focus shifts to Scott Summers’ family and that’s where things get interesting. Jonathan Hickman’s tour de force with revitalizing the X-Men was impressive enough adding Leinil Yu and Gerry Alanguilan to be the visuals for this series was something a little mix. For Yu’s art style and Hickman’s script, there are bits that don’t match having Leinil’s more serious tone trying to make it smile and look optimistic is a challenge there, but overall the action-packed visuals and details that make up the aesthetics of this book is still impressive.

Here’s where things get interesting about the microcosm look at Summers’ family with a young Cable asking permission to his ‘mum’ if he can trade his weapon to a fellow houseguest after he sets the table or Logan getting his steak overly done by Vulcan is the makings of how humorous this would be if it was in a live-action film.

But Hickman’s optimistic look on how Scott Summers’ family life is like every ‘normal’ life that the mutants wanted to have that they’ve been fighting for and you see it in these pages how very ‘human’ they can be despite having these incredible powers. What everyone’s going to be talking about in the next few weeks are the infographics that have become part of the overall aesthetics of these X-books.

The living quarters that are set-up for the characters give a hint that was a rumor by Mr. Sinister himself and Hickman adds that context through the data pages how Logan, Jean Grey, and Scot Summers living quarters look like. It is going to be an interesting series moving forward.

Truly, the ‘Dawn of X’ is going to be something to follow with Jonathan Hickman giving subtle hints on the data pages and how the revival of the X-Men moves forward as the next #1 issues get released is also listed in the back pages.

Overall if you’re just new to the world of X-Men and missed the opportunity to get the House of X and Powers of X the new series are the jumping point to catch up. There are five more X-titles to be released in the next few weeks and this is just the beginning that truly brings back the X-Men in the spotlight!
