Happy Meal 2013: It's the Smurfs 2!

07.24.2013 – The unprecedented success of the Happy Meal brand for McDonald’s has been followed by other fast food restaurants. The aftermath of the Despicable Me 2 featuring the beloved minions has caused the marketing to bring the next one –- Smurfs !

The Smurfs (Les Schtroumpfs in French) has been around long before merchandise marketing was born for collectibles as it first appeared in a Belgian comic and television show. Smurfs first appeared in comics on October 23, 1958 by Peyo (pen name of Pierre Culliford).

In 2011 the revival of the little blue people was tied up with McDonald’s Happy Meal promotion bringing eight versions of the popular characters to coincide with the release of the live action film.

Previously the US version has 16 to collect and this year they are back in full force to catch the popularity that DM2 has accomplished.

The Philippine release is WAY DIFFERENT from the US release similar to what was released in 2011.

To coincide with the release of the live action sequel Smurfs 2 McDonald’s pushed the promotion not only through Happy Meal but also through their products in the Philippines which would be followed by other countries in the Asian region as it nears the release of the film.

Upcoming US versions on August 7, 2013 to coincide the release of the live action movie.

Notice some of the toys used in this image for the Philippines may vary from the actual product released.

For the Asian region Indonesia and the Philippines has revealed 12 characters from the upcoming sequel and they are entirely different from the US release.

Some parts of the region may still have the minion craze like Australia and selected locations in the 50 states of the US. There are still not in approval of not seeing the minions being sold out but don’t get your hopes down as they will be back for the spin off movie in December 2014.

NOTE: The product image for McDonald's Indonesia is using the actual Smurfette figure released in the Philippines.

For now pledge your support to the classic creation of Peyo and celebrate the upcoming release of the Smurfs 2 for the month of July to August 2013!

Smurfs 2 opens in 3D on August 7, 2013 from Sony Animated Studios to be distributed in the Philippines by Columbia Pictures!
