Hal Jordan & the Green Lantern Corps #1 | Forged.
In this issue it’s revealed that OA, the central planet which is the headquarters of the Green Lantern Corps is gone. It was replaced by the Sinestro Corps home planet Warworld that is slowly becoming a threat in the DC Universe who claims to be the new protector under Sinestro’s rule. The Green Lantern Corps disappeared and the last of them is Hal Jordan who no longer wields one. But somewhere in a dead world space sector 563 he has with him an emerald rock of pure willpower. Something new to the GL mythos that is different from the rings they used powered by a battery.
Hal Jordan is repeating himself about his past and how he became a member of the Green Lantern Corps as the emerald rock of pure will power is something that he can’t surrender himself with as he tries to recreate it into an emerald ring.
Throughout this issue he explains what happened previously without going to specific details as he forged the emerald rock to become the most powerful Green Lantern ring ever made from pure will. The ring his forged is heard its rumble throughout the universe and planning to begin his search for the lost Green Lantern Corps.
Robert Venditti takes on the task on writing this story with art by Ethan Van Sciver, a long time Green Lantern artists who previously worked with Geoff Johns during his run on the series. It’s great to know that the Green Lantern series is in good hands with Vendetti and will be the writer for the regular issue next month. The idea that planet OA is gone replaced by the Sinestro Corps powered by the imprisoned Parallax creature is something bigger than the usual series of epic proportions a challenge for Hal Jordan. This gets more interesting at the same time an evolving narrative that also features the other lanterns.
There are other titles that don’t have a bigger scope like the Green Lantern as their numbers are down to three including Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz as the new protectors of Sector 2814. It’s been a while since Geoff Johns have crafted great stories for the series and Robert Venditti is taking the reigns to right this ship heading to the new one and it’s definitely worth a read moving forward.
