Movie Review | Captain Barbell Boom!

03.14.2019 – Captain Barbell is a Filipino superhero created by Mars Ravelo and Jim Fernandez. The original concept of the character is inspired by a shirtless circus strongman. But throughout the character’s story appearing first in Pinoy Komiks series Ravelo continue to refine Captain Barbell’s costumes as well as how the hero came to be. In other medium Captain Barbell, has been retold in movies and television and the most present one was from 2011 with a follow-up to the 2006 series both aired by the GMA Network. But as far back to the mid-1960s to the early 1970s Captain Barbell was portrayed by three different actors with the most popular one portrayed by Dolphy, the Philippine’s King of Comedy. There were no surviving copies of the two previous films and with ABS-CBN Film Restoration project this third iteration of Captain Barbell was restored back digitally remastered with the 4K quality format. It brought back the nostalgia about how Filipino films were produced during that simpler time.

04.10.2016 – KikoMachine has garnered a cult following that made Manix Abrera one of the most popular talent in the Philippine komiks industry. This also has expanded from a daily comic strip, online News Hardcore and Travel Hardcore. “Bukal sa Puso ng Lagim” is Abrera’s first solo show at the Galerie Stpahnie featuring his early KikoMachine works that evolved from having 8 identifiable characters all whom without a names to tapered characters in silhouettes.

Komikon 2013: Give a heart to Puso Negro II!

11.13.2013 – Puso Negro is a slice of life comic book story created by JP Palabon for his Section Six Comics publication. An interesting character named Puso is a misunderstood individual that gives you the wrong kind of signals. The comic book has a tag line “Teaching Good Values through Bad Conduct.” It seems a good example some people would not read. But there’s something more to JP’s inconceivable character than meets the eye and he urges you pick it up at Komikon 2013.

DFA Pinoy Komiks Exhibit & Lecture Series!

10.14.2013 – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in collaboration of the Philippune Komiks Convention (KOMIKON) brings you “Pinoy Komiks: Transcending Cultures through Creative Fusion.” This is co-organized by The Cultural Diplomacy Unit (CDU) of the Office of the Undersecretary for International Economic Relations (OUIER) and the Office of the United Nations and other International Organizations (UNIO). It’s a part of the DFA to promote the local culture and possibly bring them outside the Philippines.
