08.14.2013 – It’s been almost a month since the release of the Happy Meal featuring the characters from Smurfs 2 was released and some of them are still available in selected McDonald’s store in the Philippines.
They even held a special #ToyPhotography contest for you to be able to win a Sony Cybershot digital camera. The US release came out last July 1, 2013 and it’s not the same as how Despicable Me 2’s minions have ruled the toy meal world. |
In Asia there are twelve Smurfs 2 characters that was released and most of the toys has action features like pullback (Papa Smurfs), push button gimmick (Smufette), light up (Clumsy) and wind up functions (Brainy, Greedy, and Hefty). The Naughties Vexy (spinning spoon) and Hackus (grabber) have less stellar gimmicks still one of the best looking figurines that was also sold out. But the most interesting of the ones that had such gimmickry was Jokey encased in a translucent sphere.
Baker and Handy are the ones that came out also in the US release which has a different line up where you collect all SIXTEEN of them.
The Happy Meal release in the US doesn’t have any gimmicks rather they are static figurines similar to the ones that came out with the brand German brand in Schleich which has been making Smurfs figurines since the early 1980s.
In the Philippines the product photos or considered catalog on what Smurfs to collect have a minor controversy where they used an image of the US released version of Smufette which is entirely a static figurine. The popularity of the figure released in Asia has made her one of the sought after second to Jokey Smurf.
Individually each Smurf 2 for this year is unique compared to the EIGHT toys that were released to promote the original film in 2011. But what makes the ones that came before it has more details compared to the Smurfs 2 versions.
Overall the Happy Meal featuring Smurfs 2 may not be as sold out as the Despicable Me 2’s minions but they definitely stand out from the ones released in the US.
Smurfs 2 is still showing in selected cinemas in the Philippines in 3D, 2D and IMAX 3D from Sony Animated Pictures to be distributed by Columbia Pictures. For more about the upcoming Happy Meal toys LIKE McDo PH on Facebook!
