Comic Book Review: DC The New 52 #1
Technically this isn't a "comic book" per se, but with all the hype and buzz building up, plus the fact that it has a #1 numbering attached to it, I have every reason to believe that DC Comics may start producing a series of "preview books" each month that are similar to the competition (i.e Marvel Previews). So without further ado, let's begin the review proper.
Since the big announcement last month that they were going to revamp the universe and relaunch majority of their books, DC Comics has earned both the ire and admiration of its entire fanbase. After over 70 years of publishing comics and characters that have remained mostly true and unchanged in structure, the publisher (under the direction of co-publishers Dan Didio and Jim Lee) has decided to give a complete makeover to their titles and heroes, paving the way for a bold and new direction which they have dubbed "The New 52".

DC Reboot Update: Full look at "NEW" Superman in Action Comics #1
If there's anything to feel awkward about the forthcoming DC Reboot, this new reveal presented by DC Comics and the New York Post of the cover to Action Comics #1 probably takes the cake:
Ok, let's take a moment to ponder and analyze this entire cover pic. It's the new look of Superman.
He's wearing a classic blue "S" symbol T-Shirt.
He has a short cape.
He's wearing a regular pair of jeans and shoes.
How the heck this got approved to usher in the DC Reboot is beyond me and most of the DC fanbase. While the focus in this book is being justified as a "Year One" concept for Supes, I'm not too sold on the "half-assed"Supes outfit. It looks too much like one of those T-Shirts you can buy off the department store, and all you need is a red towel and you're good to go... in an awkward sort of way.
Granted, the good news is that the book will be written by Grant Morrison and illustrated by Rags Morales, but this "new look" of Superman does the opposite of making me excited about reading this book based on DC's iconic superhero. I know this version of Clark Kent is actually his "past self", when he was still learning to control his powers and didn't have the ability to fly yet, but why couldn't they take a different approach at tailoring his costume, let alone NOT give him a costume at all? I know they're taking a page out of Tom Welling and his portrayal of a younger Supes from Smallville, but this is just a downright silly look for the Man of Steel. Heck, it reminds me so much of a Super Friends episode where Superman regressed to a child again (due to Red Kryptonite) and Firestorm used his powers to make his costume fit his age at the time. When he finally turned back, you can just imagine how tight fitting and small his costume was, and that's the feeling I get from this new costume. Well, one can only hope there's a good reason why Kal-El looks like this and why his marriage to Lois Lane had to go down south like Spider-Man's did a few years ago, but that's the repercussions of the DC Reboot for you. The Man of Steel turns 73!
The month of May yields a lot of pleasant surprises, for May 3 happens to be the day 73 years ago when Action Comics #1 was released and introduced to the world one of the most beloved and iconic heroes the world has ever known - Superman! Co-created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster and published by DC Comics, the Kryptonian born Kal-El would be the last survivor of his planet sent to Earth by his parents; Adopted by a loving earth couple and given the name Clark Kent, who would be raised up with a strong moral conscience and go on to champion the cause of "Truth, Justice, and the American Way", serving as a symbol of hope and justice against all evildoers!
Several publications in DC Comics and other forms of media have featured Supes fighting the good fight, but his milestone issue of Action Comics #900 just hit comic shops last week (with him renouncing his American Citizenship in a back up feature by famed screenwriter David Koepp). With a new movie reboot directed by Zack Snyder and starring Henry Cavill in the titular role slated for release on fall next year, it just proves that this "Man of Steel" is still popular as ever. 73 years and counting, he continues to be an inspiration to fans and peeps the world over! With that in mind, there's only one thing left to be said:
Happy 73 Years Superman!

"Immortals" - Heroes, Titans and A Minotaur!
Before Henry Cavill will be seen as the new Superman on the big screen, he will appear as Greek hero Theseus in "Immortals" - a Universal/ Relativity Media movie directed by Tarsem Singh ("The Cell", "The Fall").
The movie will follow Theseus' endeavours to save humanity from the war-hungry King Hyperion. If one is familiar with the story of Theseus, it involves a labyrinth and a Minotaur!
"Immortals" is set for release in November 11 in 3D, and besides Cavill, it also stars other pretty people like Luke Evans (Robin Hood), Kellan Lutz (Twillight), Isabel Lucas (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen), Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire) as well as veteran Mickey Rourke (Iron Man 2).
At this weekend's Wondercon, a series of "Immortals" movie posters were released, including a gorgeous one of Henry Cavill as Theseus (see pic above!).
A trailer was also shown at the panel. Red Dot Diva hopes that it will officially be released next week so that she can have a peek on how the movie might look like! She hopes that it's not all just a lot of pretty fluff with not much ...erm... meat.
In addition to these news, indie publishing company Archaia announced that they will be releasing a prequel graphic novel in hardcover in September! There are a few top names in comics who are involved with this graphic novel - David Mack (Kabuki), Ron Marz (Witchblade), Dennis Calero (Dark Tower) and Ben Templesmith (30 Days of Night) - just to name a few!
Red Dot Diva is actually a bit more excited about the graphic novel than the movie itself and she can't wait for it to be released so that she can get her hands on it!
Which one are you actually looking forward to? Movie or graphic novel?

Lex Luthor meets Death!
![]() | 07.08.2010 - Death from Neil Gaiman's universe will be crossing over to the DC Universe to visit Superman's archnemesis Lex Luthor in what can be a one time big time story written by Paul Cornell. Comic Book Resource gives us the inside treat in this rare opportunity to see a Vertigo owned character dropping by the DC continuity. The fans will wait until Action comics #894 gets released in October. This is not the first time a Vertigo character has landed in the DC Universe. There was one instance in 1998 in a "JLA" storyline written by Grant Morrison Endless came to visit, but its been a while that it happened up until now... |
